Jermaine Clement’s ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ should not work: it's a mockumentary about the domestic challenges of being a modern day vampire. The characters spend their time hunting for virgins, negotiating with local necromancers, holding occultist seances and avoiding deadly sunlight. It doesn't scream 'multi-Emmy nominated success'. In fact, it's hard to work out who the target audience is... Count von Count?

The Myth of a Hometown
There’s a tree in Leamington that claims to be the centre of England. It’s not, but we’re pretty close. The actual middle of England is about 20 miles up the road and I think we just thought we’d have a speculative pop at the title. Who checks these things anyway? My Grandad once told me that cutting down the Leamington tree would cause the whole of England to collapse, like matter being sucked into a black hole.

Euphoria's Complicated Teenagers
Growing up watching British TV doesn’t give you many options. When you’re at school, shows like Waterloo Road tell you that being a teenager is just a matter of being a bit stroppy. Once you’re in college, shows like the Inbetweeners imply there are essentially five categories: you can be nerdy, stupid, awkward, a liar or a girl. Then you might go to university, where shows like Fresh Meat limit your options to being a victim or a ‘legend’.

On July 26th, 2020, the movie director David Lynch uploaded a video on YouTube. Holding a jet-black bell jar, Lynch speaks directly to camera in his characteristic cartoon cadence “I painted this jar for a specific reason that I will tell you about at a later date”.

Film Review: Aquarius
Clara, an ex music critic living out her retirement in a Brazilian seashore apartment, is effortlessly cool. She is completely at home in herself and in her environment, with nothing to prove and no shits to give. She also emanates power. When a man asks to drive her home after a night out, she informs him that she will get a taxi. That is the end of the matter: we cut straight to Clara getting out of the taxi as it reaches her apartment.
