Me, Myself and iTunes
The soundtrack of my life is filled with various playlists. It’s just that I have never considered an Anti-Valentine’s Day playlist—until now. The music that grabs me at the core includes symphonic, Rock&Roll, Jazz, R&B, Gregorian chants, country, soul. Well, you get it: five lines and four spaces with a verbal message or melodic message. You name it, I can like it—eventually.

Dance to the Beat of Your Own Drum
Ahh…Valentine’s Day - The holiday where we as a culture are both brainwashed and conditioned to believe that in order to feel and celebrate love, we must be in a “relationship” with a significant other. This day can be tremendously daunting and challenging for those that are single and buy into this belief. I know this because this was my reality for many years. As the day approached, I can remember feeling alone, depressed and ashamed that I didn't have someone "special" to share it with. When you don't have a solid inner connection to yourself, the hype of this holiday can cause you to want to crawl under the covers and pretend the day doesn't exist.

It Was Valentine's Day?
Every year I find myself single (or kind of single) on Valentine's Day. And, every year I vow to make the day a "me-day," all about self-care and loving myself, and every year that's what I do. Except this year, something astonishing happened. The day came, I went about my 24 hours allotted as if it was a regular Sunday, and then at midnight I realized, "holy rip in the space-time continuum! A somewhat single female in her 30's let Valentine's Day come and go without so much as looking into the mirror to give herself a pep talk!" Not a single love note to myself was written. Not a single tear was shed over a man. I didn't purchase flowers for myself. Make a special meal. Nothing.

The Anti-Love Song: Is That All There Is To A Fire?
So what is an anti-love song? I'll tell you that most breakup songs don't cut it. Songs about assholes cheating don't cut it. Even Betty Davis's "Anti-Love Song" doesn't qualify in my book: the song is about a man who is so attractive--Cause I know you could possess my body--that she avoids him for fear of falling too hard.

10 Reasons Not to Vy for a Valentine
Your summer fling(s) fizzled out – just in time for you miss the draft for cuddling season. You took some months for ‘self-care’ – inevitably, time to binge shows you actually like, hoard processed snacks (that’s what all this extra bed room is for, right?), and then counteract it all with gym sessions when you realize you’ve gone too far. Okay, so maybe you went mainly to post yourself in your compressive activewear. I see you, girl! That one squat counts for something!

Valentine's Day Blues
There are two men who could have been St. Valentine. Both of them ended bloody. One was a man helping Christian couples wed at a time when it was illegal. Emperor Claudius II had him beheaded. The other performed miracles and even healed the blind daughter of an official and sent a rose to her on his execution day with the message, "From your Valentine." Claudius II took his head off too.

Not Today, Cupid
Honestly, they should just start calling it 'Excuse to buy excessive amounts of chocolate' Day. Or maybe 'Forcing people to do something nice for their partner' Day. But maybe that's just me being a little bitter about not having a Valentine and remaining perpetually single for a good portion of my life. But, there really is something to the whole 'learn to love yourself' thing that everyone talks about, and sure, love is nice and cute and wholesome...but you're just as capable being happy on your own and celebrating that independence. And let's not forget celebrating the friends in your life with a little Galentine's Day moment.
