Survivor
Many look back on their younger years with fond memories of their glory days, reminiscing about days gone by. I on the other hand, along with many others, have spent my life actively trying to block out and forget those days. To say that growing up for me was a struggle would be an understatement. I was an outcast in my younger years, bullied by the other kids in school, with no real friends until reaching eighth grade. My home life wasn't any better, my father was an alcoholic with anger issues who ran our household with an iron fist. Often times I found myself hiding away with a book to escape from reality for a while, wishing so much to be the characters I was reading about.

Mental Health Songs That Got Me Through Middle School
In recent years, mental health has become a huge topic in media and everyday life. Ten years ago, when I was in middle school, it was not such an accepted topic. I have depression, anxiety and anorexia, all of which got brought to the forefront of my mind in middle school. School is hard for everyone, that’s just a fact, but it is harder for some than it is for others. When going through grade school, I found numerous vices to help alleviate the mental turmoil that I experience; music being one of them. I don’t think I realized it at the time, but my favorite songs were never love songs, they were specific to mental health. In a time of dread and anxiety, it's no surprise that my go-to playlist was based off of songs portraying the same feeling and surviving them.

Sound Track of my Life
Oh, my teenage years...a time of life that no amount of money could get me to revisit if that were an option. I do, however, revisit the musical memories of those years because, lets face it, music now (if you can call it that) is just going downhill. Some of my favorite songs include:

My angsty teen songs
Tokyo Narita- Halsey I was always angsty, still, and this song has many emotions that can’t be described. The lyrics never really held a deep meaning for me but when I’m all run out from thinking, feeling, or saying anything I can play this. It’s not anything I’ve experienced but I can feel what she’s feeling like going through the motions. It’s just a short freestyle but it feels like so much more. I really can’t explain it.

The Music That Kept Me Going
We've all been through that phase; those crucial developmental years when nothing holds meaning and our hormones drive our parents to the brink of shipping you off somewhere. I myself was a bit of a trouble child in middle and high school, but the latter institution was when things took a turn.
