The Heroes of Allen Academy. Third Place in Hometown Heroes Challenge.
Throughout my life I have always been blessed with excellent teachers. Unfortunately for them I am and have always been a terrible student. I believe they’d think otherwise, and have written as much in my senior yearbook. You see, it is not that I was tardy, disruptive, or unstudious. It is that with such a myriad of great instructors I should now be in a skyline penthouse, or lounging on some foreign beach counting millions of dollars. I am instead a college dropout pursuing an unreasonable career in writing. This is not to be counted as a failure though. I was given the tools, guidance, and support from my educators to pursue whatever I found fulfilling. I would not have achieved any modicum of success in my writing or my personal life without them.

In Defense of a Friend
Looking at this picture of me in 10th grade it would be easy to write me off as a skinny, meek, nerdy kid; which was true for the most part. What this photo doesn't tell you is that even as a skinny, meek, nerdy kid I was fiercely loyal to my friends. Between bullies and algebra they were the only thing that kept me sane at school. These are the people that I ate lunch with, played after school with, grew into my teenage years with, and survived a lot of troubling times with. It was through them that I learned who I was, and what I stood for, but that wasn’t an easy journey.

Love for the Deathless
When I first laid eyes on her we were but cavemen. Neanderthals ignorant to the dangers of the world, and to love. We were born in the early embers of an unforgiving Earth. Survival took precedence over any matters of the heart, and I had not yet learned to communicate the depth of my yearning. The ice age came and froze my affections before they ever truly blossomed. I kept it close, and quiet; the thought of her was enough to keep me warm. The world thawed and we were separated.

Uniquely Detroit
“When I think of home I can only think of Detroit. It's the place where I was born, where I was raised. It's a city that lives in infamy, yet is so well loved for what it brings to the world. Legends were born here, history was made here. Love it or hate is, Detroit is...”

Penguin Sledding and Other Cool Concepts. Third Place in Fan(dom) Favorite Challenge.
Will you go penguin sledding with me? A simple question from a silly child took us by the hand and led us into one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever crafted. Most fans of Avatar the Last Airbender would say their interest began with the now iconic introduction:

The Forsaken Land
“This land once belonged to them, those foul creatures birthed from Gaia. Humanity they were called. Vicious monsters full of greed, and violence. They wasted Gaia’s precious resources, and polluted her lands without remorse. This is why we were born, little ones. We were born from Gaia’s need to rid herself of those parasites. Perfect beings with divine purpose.” The voice of the speaker was deep and resolute. He spoke in such a way that those in attendance had no doubt in his words. His knowledge was absolute and true.

I Do Not Want To Be a Writer
I do not want to be a writer. Everyone on Vocal wants to be a writer to some degree. It is why we’re all here. We all share that unscratchable itch to put words to paper. We want our thoughts, our feelings, our ideas, conveyed to the world, and the only way we know how is through writing. We so desperately want to be understood, to entertain, to create. It is the eternal struggle that connects us all. We want to share our crafted worlds and experiences with someone, anyone who may resonate with it. I do not want to be a writer, however being a writer is not something you choose. It is something within you, or something that happens upon you. One day a compulsion arises in you to write, and you obey. There are many types of writers in this world: the novelist, the blogger, the poet, etc. I do not want to be a writer, but if I am resigned to my fate of being such, I want to be the Neil Gaiman of writers.
