Making resolutions Often, the kinds of things people put on their New Year’s resolution list are directed toward their image of themselves: work out more, eat better, lose weight, and make more money. All of these are admirable goals; however, so often the list is created out of a perception of ourselves that has been affected by our internalizing the messages we receive through media and marketing.

Why I Just Joined the “We Do Not Care Club”
This morning, I discovered the “We Do not Care Club,” inadvertently started by Just Being Melani. It’s sort of an unofficial club for women who have entered the perimenopausal era of their lives. You know, the beginning of the time in life when “women of a certain age” discover how tired they are, and how tired of being tired they are.

Girls with Autism and Why Society Missed Them
Years ago I had a theory about why there is so much violence among men and boys. Informed by my education in cultural anthropology and my own imagination, I theorized that the male human was still being affected by their evolutionary need to fight to protect the “tribe.” As such, in spite of humanity coming to a place where we should be able to “all get along,” boys and men found meaning in being part of a cohesive group of some kind, including gangs. The violence of gangs, MMA fighters, boxers, and other groups against one another was a release of this inherent need to fight; anger built up because there is no other type of release available other than these.

The “Disability Effect”
I saw this video the other day in a Facebook group I belong to. The group, Cultural Autism Studies at Yale, (CASY) a semi-private Facebook group for CASY/ Cultural Autism Studies at Yale, founded by Roger J. Jou MD, MPH, PhD is a psychiatrist and researcher at Yale University specializing in autism. One of the administrators is Dawn Prince-Hughes, author of Songs of the Gorilla Nation: My Journey through Autism. This book was instrumental in helping me as I learned about the “disorder” my son had recently been diagnosed with over twenty years ago. As I read it, little bells rung in the back of my mind regarding my own experiences, but I paid no attention because her life was so very different from mine.

3 Annoying Design Flaws in Household Items
That space between the faucets and the wall I don’t know who invented the modern sink and the hardware that goes with it, but I do know that whomever it was never once thought about the person who would be cleaning their bathroom or kitchen. The space between the back of the faucet and the wall is so tiny a sponge can barely fit in there sideways, let alone in a manner that will actually clean the space. I can certainly only get a sponge in there edgewise, and even that is a challenge. The frustration I feel when I’m trying to clean a sink is something I’ve had to learn to walk away from. If I didn’t, someone would find me hours later, scrubbing until the sponge falls apart, tears running down my face. You know why?

That One Time I Tricked the Front-man
He was the lead guitarist of a very popular local band that played the big venue on the west side of Phoenix, Arizona in the early-to-mid-1980s. Full of himself, as all good front-men — and women — should be. Where would David Lee Roth have been in the mid-80s had he not had buns of steel and the attitude of a narcissist?

Open Letter to My Children
Kids, I know I’m a weirdo. If you think about it, you do too. After all, it was me who hung the creepy doll head on the light pull in the living room when you were little. I’m the one who watched vampire movies and reruns of The Addams Family in between episodes of Facts of Life and Gilmore Girls.
