I’m one of those people who analyzes movies and television shows. I do this mostly in my head or in conversation, although when I was in my 20s I sat down and wrote out a five- or six-page treatise on symbolism in the movie The Lost Boys, just for fun. So, what I want to share with you today is not without precedent.

How MTV Saved My Life
We did not have cable television in 1981. That was the year Video Killed the Radio Star, and the way we heard the songs we loved changed forever. I did see that video at someone else’s house the day it happened; but in our house, it would be another two or three years before we had MTV. Still, that day was a harbinger of a future I could not imagine. At the time, I thought I was doomed to live the rest of my life in misery, fear, and pain.

Signs You May Have Time-Traveled Back to a 1980s Rock Club
I was in my twenties during most of the 1980s. The first six years of the decade were tumultuous for me, and what I needed most was to escape the life I had become trapped in. Staying busy with work, school, and the Air National Guard helped. So did writing; however, what really helped me escape was MTV.

Affirmations Based on My Yoga Practice
When I first learned about yoga in my early 20s, I was impressed by the spiritual aspect of it. I had been introduced to a form of martial arts called Jiu Jitsu when I was twenty and found the stretching, breathing, and focus to be both exhilarating and empowering.
