The Orphans in the Woods
Three days had passed since Mr. and Mrs. Hamberg had died and on the fourth day Rohan and Gertrude could no longer pretend as if nothing had happened. The siblings had met each other in the kitchen, both looking for breakfast. They could smell something terrible in the air. They could see the disgusted looks on each other's faces as they both tried to bite their tongues about the stench. Rohan stared at the last slice of cheese on the fridge shelf as he stood frozen holding the fridge door open. Gertrude grabbed the last of the Lucky Charms and poured the remaining cereal into two bowls, placing them atop the bistro table before sitting down.

The Orphans in the Woods
The day passed slowly, and Gertrude and Rohan didn't speak to each other much that day. It was quiet in the house. Rohan stayed in his room most of the day with the exception of bathroom and snack breaks. Gertrude wandered around the house feeling mixed emotions and trying to think of anything else that she should do or pack for their move. At one point in the afternoon, she peeked out of the living room window to see if the dog was still on their front porch. He was gone. She felt a combination of sadness and relief.

Marriage is a Deep, Deep Subject
This is my first entry into the Vocal "Marriage" community. I've been avoiding it. I didn't want to write my thoughts or opinions about it because they are often deep and abstract. I've been single, married, and divorced. I know what all three "titles" feel like. I was single for 40 years, married for 12 years, and now I've been divorced since November 2023. Do I have anything to say here in this community that won't come across as jaded, bitter, or cynical? Yes. Do I have anything to say here in this community that is thoughtful, honest, important, necessary, or kind? Yes. So here I am after waiting out the entire year of 2024 as the "divorcee" ready to speak about marriage again to those who still enjoy the conversation or institution of marriage.

Are you in the right job?
In a perfect world, people would be hired because they are the best at the job they are applying for. In a perfect world, that best hired person for the job would take pride in his talent and work and provide the best product and/or service as he was hired to do. That's in a "perfect" world - but we don't live in a "perfect" world, do we? What I've seen happen more often is the wrong person in a job. The wrong person doesn't do the job right. The wrong person doesn't "love" the job or the product or the service. The wrong person has no pride in the job and the wrong person often makes the customers of the product or service unsatisfied. How did the wrong person get that job? Why is the wrong person still doing that job?

The Orphans in the Woods
Rohan put the car key into the driver's door handle and unlocked his mother's 65 Mustang. He had looked around outside first to see if there were any people anywhere spying. Their house in Branchville was about a mile down the country road, alone on an acre of land, but still close enough to the small neighborhood of family houses that were built right on the lake. No one was around so Rohan sat inside the Mustang without worrying about nosey people questioning anything.

Learning the Stock Market
I was born into a family that valued work and money. Though I watched many family members make detrimental financial mistakes, I also watched many of them rise from almost nothing to almost the top. They were gamblers mostly, willing to take a chance on something new. They were also hard workers, willing to get into anything and get their hands dirty. They had no fear because they believed in their own abilities and their work ethic. I admired them and watched them fall and rise and fall and rise. I paid attention to what brought them success and what didn't. In some areas, I was able to use their experience to do better for myself. In other areas, I had to make my own mistakes. The world of finance is beset with opportunity and pitfalls. No one knows everything, but those of us who trust the value of money, continue to learn and grow regardless of the ups and downs. The stock market is the chart that symbolizes the life of money in a global economy.

The Orphans in the Woods
Rohan was sitting on the couch with the Bank Bag, and Gertrude had sat down in front of the cushioned bench chest. She knew that her mother called the bench the "Hope Chest" and had kept sentimental items inside. She lifted the top and began to look inside as Rohan counted all the money they had collected so far.

The Orphans in the Woods
Gertrude went to the pantry cabinet and found her box of Lucky Charms. She poured some into a bowl and then went to the sink to get water from the faucet to wet her cereal with. She sat with her bowl at the bistro table across from her brother who was almost finished eating his cereal. He looked up at her for a moment and noticed that she had Lucky Charms in her bowl.

The Orphans in the Woods
After Gertrude put on her favorite pink shirt and some clean jeans, she began to look through her clothes to see what she should pack. She pulled out her suitcase, the one her mom had given to her that she had never used yet, and began to put the clothes inside. She figured jeans, sweaters, basic t-shirts , socks and underwear was all she would need. She thought about her snowsuit, the one she always wore when she'd go ice-skating or playing in the snow. It was bulky and would take too much room in her suitcase, but she wanted to bring it. Maybe she could find a big bag to put it into. She turned to go back to the bathroom to grab her toothbrush, and she was slightly startled when she saw her brother standing in the doorway watching her.
