Hollywood’s Guide to the Apocalypse
If there’s anything every generation alive today is ready for, thanks to George Romero, Robert Kirkman, and Zack Snyder, is the apocalypse. Whether it be zombie, bird flu, AI, or nuclear bomb induced, we all have our own little guide to the end of the world. Baby Boomers through Generation Alpha have Romero’s every “Of The Dead” movies; Return, Night, Dawn, Day, Land, Diary, Survival...an entire collection of survival kits. Generation Z have The Walking Dead, The Core, and 28 Days Later. Not to mention Zombieland. Everybody has that step-by-step guide.

I Finally Watched 1943’s ‘A Tree Grows in Brooklyn’ With My Dad
My Dad The first movie my father ever watched was A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It hit bookshelves in 1943, and theaters in 1945. The movie is so old, hardly any of the cast or staff that worked on and in the movie is alive, save for Ted Donaldson, who played twelve-year-old Neeley. Dad was born to an Amish family in March of 1933, smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression. He once told me one of his first memories was of all the dust in the trees, thanks to the Dust Bowl that accompanied the depression. His family was poor, so like most of the Amish of then and now, as soon as he was old enough, his mom and dad put him to work so he could bring in some money for the family. In the summer of ‘45, his parents sent their twelve-year-old off to a friend’s farm to work.

Food in Film
Ah, quarantine. A time for thinking, sleeping, streaming, and eating. Usually, food and movies are at the top of my, and all of America’s, to-do list...but when the Covid hits, we take them to the next level. Our family finally ran out of luck this week, and half of us tested positive. We're all remaining healthy, but getting more and more stir crazy by the day. So in between naps, catching Pokémon, and more naps, it’s been food and movies for me. Oh--and WandaVision. Such a good show.
