Until Next Time
Taken too soon by a tragedy, our fellow Vocal Creator Tom Bradbury passed away this week. Things haven't been the same since! Everyone is stricken with grief, sadness, and disbelief at the sudden turn of events. In the spirit of mourning, I've written a poem to honor his memory. Please enjoy.

Healthcare Hero
Being a caregiver runs in my blood. Going back to World War II in 1939, with my great grandmother Sarah Massey. She was a member of the American Army Nurse Corps (ANC for short). Her employment ran until 1945, after the war ended, but her journey wasn't over. A young, handsome German soldier named John Joseph Derscha was badly wounded with a bullet in his left thigh. She dutifully cared for him until he was fully recovered, fell deeply in love, and went back to America together. Since then, the women in my family have answered the call to the unpredictable profession of nursing. I'm no exception. While my dream job is to be a published author, my passion lies in my position in healthcare. Since March 12th, 2012, I have been a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), dedicating my life to providing quality care to all individuals.

Reading, Writing, and Coffee
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Angela Derscha; I’m twenty-nine years old, and I work as a Medication Aide for an assisted living community in Georgia. But through and through, I'm a writer at heart. My obsession for literature began when I was eight years old, with Michael Moorcock and his impressive dark fantasy work.

The Bull Comes at Night
I remember it clearly as if it were yesterday. The stuffy, congested air, the flickering incandescent lights above and to either side of me, the smell of body odor and faded take out from the local Chinese restaurant, the pain of standing upright for an extended period; the claustrophobic feeling of being surrounded by strangers with a common goal. At the time, completely irrelevant, but now a reminder of better days. It's funny of the things you remember before you die.

The Golden Promise
My Abuela died when I was seven years old. Too young to learn about the futility of life. Barely old enough to comprehend the concept of someone leaving you and never coming back. The realization did not sink in for another three years during 5th-grade Health class. My classmates and teacher were talking about the human body and how quickly it can shut down. The subject was a seventy-three-year-old woman who had an infection from a cut untreated for too long. Within days, she had gone septic, a rapid progression disease that attacks your organs directly. I immediately thought of her while watching the presentation. Abuela was seventy-three, had an old nail stuck in her foot for two years that went untreated, and suffered from an infection that took her life. Tears would not stop flowing.

Love In A Box
Some might work 9-5, while others prefer to be homemakers and mothers, but not me. I can't settle for one set path, instead, I strive for every opportunity to improve myself; as a woman, wife, and mother to a beautiful four-year-old girl. Not to judge anybody for their lifestyle, quite the contrary, in fact, I salute them for being so sure of what they want in life. Here I am, trying to juggle the chaos of daily living, in addition to keeping my insecurities and anxieties in check, while my husband is overseas fighting for our freedoms and liberty. I miss him desperately every day. On paper, it seems glamourous, but being a military wife is a full-time career by itself. Physically and mentally demanding, especially to my patience!
