The battle with himself was elusive. In high school it became apparent that everyone he knew saw him differently than he saw himself. They called him things he did not recognize, like “girl” or “young lady”. Every time he heard himself addressed this way, as “too pretty to play such tough sports” or “really attractive in a dress”, he gagged a little.

Lunatic
It was if she’d seen a ghost. The movements, the perception, the expression was all mystical. I couldn’t quite grasp it, I didn’t have a name for it but she just wasn’t herself. Her name was Cara, we had been dating 2 months and not until now had I seen this side of her, this whimsical and possibly paranoid existence. “Have you seen the moon tonight?!” Cara beckons, arms outstretched reaching toward the sky leaning back as she spoke in a sing-songy voice. Her tone laced with hypnosis, her appearance slightly pale. “No,” I said plainly, “what about it.”

Love, Actually
I thought I loved her. I thought I loved my job. I thought I loved my apartment. I thought I loved my life. Truth is. I settled for the way loving her made me feel. On paper, it was divine, 2 30 something’s, finally figuring it out. She dressed nice, she smelled pretty, she could say the right things at the right time, but I was not in love with her, as a person, as a whole being, as a complex and intricate entity, I just needed to feel needed, and the way she needed me felt good.
