"Best Friends"
Written in the style of a historical text discussing the reign of Queen Alexandra of Dorion, first Empress and second ruler of the Alexandrian Empire. Inexplicably intwined with her reign is the fierce debate about the exact position occupied by her ‘best friend’ and bodyguard, the assassin Sayfiya al-Aziz...

Summer Salads for the Sensory
Australian Summers tend to be inhospitably hot, which makes me lean toward foods that don't require heating or much cooking. On days when I can fry an egg by cracking it onto the pavement (and promptly have a meltdown over the lack of hygiene), the last thing I want to do is spend time in close proximity to a hot stove.

A Flight Of Dragons
There weren't always dragons in the valley. That was not to say that there were never dragons in the valley. The high peaks that surrounded the fertile land, dotted with farms, apparently made for very good nests during early Spring, much to the disgruntlement of the birds of prey who lived there year-round. The goats and other animals who inhabited the lower slopes made for a convenient food supply, and the thermal vents kept the nests warm while the parents hunted.

Holding Ground - Prologue
There weren't always dragons in the valley. Like many other creatures associated with magic and those who practiced it, dragons tended to cluster around Enclaves, where they were treated with more respect than fear, and everything was reasonably fireproof. Some of them had followed the young Beastmaster, Kirios, to their new home, even though the derilict castle had a long way to go before it was a functional Enclave.

Alphabet Islands - Prologue
There weren't always dragons in the valley at the centre of the mountainous island of Aversion Aerie, but there were now. These ones, not much bigger than a small horse or large pony, had appeared a generation or two ago, during the time of the Great Banishment. This was the source of no few jokes, told in naughty whispers awa from the hearing of their disapproving elders. This evolution also led to the Ace Arrows, apparently a pun that made the elders who were in on the joke scowl and mutter angrily, becoming perhaps the most formidible airforce in at least living memory.

The Queen of the World - Chapter Three
Read the previous chapters here... Prologue Chapter One The meeting of allies took time to set up. After all, even messenger birds could only fly so quickly, and some of the attendees were travelling from the far corners of the empire.
