Pattern Two: Feng Shui of Bow-Shaped Water, Reverse Bow Roads, and T-Intersections
In the previous lecture, we explored the “Four Waters Converge” pattern, where streams from all directions merge to form a single body of water, concentrating vital energy (sheng qi, 生气). Today, we’ll discuss another common water pattern called bow-shaped water (gong xin shui, 弓形水). This pattern naturally forms at river bends (see Figure 1) and is often intentionally designed in Feng Shui as a protective feature known as Golden City Water (jin cheng shui, 金城水).

Two Types of Roads with Good Feng Shui (1)
Authentic Chinese Feng Shui encompasses five fundamental aspects of knowledge: dragon (龙, the larger environmental terrain), acupoint (穴, the building site), sand (砂, the nearby terrain), water (水), and orientation (向). The first four belong to the Form School of Feng Shui, emphasizing how the environmental qi field influences people. "Orientation," on the other hand, pertains to the Compass School of Feng Shui, involving esoteric knowledge rooted in the Book of Changes (I Ching, 周易), as well as the theories of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. These five aspects highlight the critical role of "water" in Feng Shui as a geographical element.

Introduction: The Origin of "Feng Shui" The term "Feng Shui" originated in The Book of Burial (Zang Shu, 葬书) by Guo Pu (郭璞), a renowned Feng Shui master of the Eastern Jin dynasty (317 CE – 420 CE). Over time, "Feng Shui" has become the most recognized term for this ancient discipline. Guo Pu was not only a skilled practitioner but also a respected literary figure and philologist. His work, The Book of Burial, remains one of the most significant classics in Feng Shui, serving as a foundation for the field's development across generations.

Differences between Chinese Feng Shui and Western Feng Shui
Difference 4: Mirrors in Feng Shui In Western Feng Shui, mirrors are frequently used. In the book Interior Design with Feng Shui, mirrors are described as “the so-called aspirin of Feng Shui.” Two of the most representative uses of mirrors in Western Feng Shui books are: hanging a large mirror on the wall behind the stove in the kitchen and placing a large mirror in front of the dining table. These two practices do not exist in Chinese Feng Shui because they go against its fundamental principles.

Since traditional Chinese architecture often adopts the courtyard house style (Siheyuan, 四合院), this article uses a siheyuan as an example to illustrate the correct application of the Bagua Map, focusing on the relationship between the main building and the courtyard gate.

Chinese Feng Shui vs. Western Feng Shui: Key Differences
In last week’s lesson, I explained two key differences between Chinese Feng Shui and Western Feng Shui. First, Western Feng Shui often misinterprets Feng Shui as an art of placement focused on furniture arrangement, whereas authentic Chinese Feng Shui emphasizes harmonizing a person’s internal qi with the spatial and temporal energies of their environment. Second, the concept of qi is frequently misunderstood in Western Feng Shui, where it is often simplified to mean moving air. In contrast, Chinese Feng Shui defines qi in a much deeper and more complex way, involving temporal, spatial, and human body qi. These foundational differences highlight the gap between authentic Chinese Feng Shui and its Western adaptation.

Chinese Feng Shui vs. Western Feng Shui: Key Differences
Feng Shui is practiced worldwide in two prominent forms: Chinese Feng Shui and Western Feng Shui. While the latter evolved from the Chinese tradition, these two approaches are fundamentally different. Western Feng Shui lacks the true theoretical foundation of authentic Feng Shui. Instead, it is based on misunderstanding and misapplications of some essential principles of Chinese Feng Shui. Although it uses the name “Feng Shui” and borrows some terminology, it is disconnected from authentic Feng Shui. Essentially, Western Feng Shui is a Western cultural adaptation based on some terms from Chinese Feng Shui.
