Summer on the Farm. Winner in The Summer That Wasn’t Challenge.
It was a rite of passage for the Hurley kids to spend a summer working on Uncle Curtis’ farm. Dad would have a Memorial Day BBQ with the whole family. Just hot dogs and beers for the grown-ups. Curtis would come up all laughing and joking around, then he’d squeeze your bicep to decide if you were ready.

I Cut My Finger With a ‘Chainsaw’. Top Story - July 2025.
It was about noon on Saturday. I had already finished trimming the bushes in the front yard using the electric hedge trimmer that my daughter affectionately refers to as ‘the chainsaw.’ She was furious that I could do such a thing without her and refused to let it go. As if I could turn back time so she could have a crack at it.

My Daughter's Favorite Books: Part 2 . Top Story - June 2025.
About two years ago I sat in a tire place interviewing my eight year old daughter to pass the time. I wanted to know about her favorite books. Back in those days, Judy Moody and Calvin and Hobbes were among her favorites. Since then, she has grown and the world around her has changed. A Good Haircut . Top Story - May 2025.
Ruthie used a paper fan with a picture of blue-eyed Jesus while the air conditioner audibly struggled. She’d brought her daughter to Connie’s salon for a trim. Connie cleared her afternoon, knowing it would take hours. First to dye, set, and style the look that Ruthie had maintained for twenty years. Then to comb the girl’s knotted clumps of auburn hair.

Black Mirror's New Season Premiere: As Familiar as it is Outrageous. Content Warning.
Black Mirror is not the kind of show I like to binge. It's better in small doses for a few reasons. Some episodes get really heavy and at times hit a bit too close to home. I also like taking it slow because the stories are so rich and full of meaning. It takes a while to let them marinate. Clearly they are meant to do more than just entertain.

A Shockingly Relevant Film From 1957. Top Story - January 2025.
My husband and I have a subscription to the Criterion Channel streaming service. Every month Criterion will organize its films into themed compilations. Some are pretentious sounding like ‘Cinema Verité’ others are kind of silly like ‘The Mustache Club.’ But they often help us decide what to watch. The theme that caught our eye this month was ‘Cast Against Type: Heroes as Villains.’ I love it when an actor shows off their range.
