The family were all tucked up in bed. Sheets freshly washed. Children dutifully scrubbed and wearing new pyjamas. Everyone had long since succumbed to sleep. Wrung out. The children with anticipation, and the grown-ups with ordinary exhaustion.

Before The Sleep
You could slice the tension in the air with one razor-sharp claw. She raises one, as if to do just that. It's curved, like her mouth. All those teeth! Bright white and so very long, like frost-glazed midwinter nights. Their points carry venom, and the promise of festive red splashes. Wine on snow.

The Government Hushed It Up
We don't know where they came from or exactly when. Sometime in the last couple of weeks most likely. Thing is, the ocean is almost as unexplored as space. Some thought they've been hiding right here all this time. Weird we've never seen any evidence of them, though, right? That's why others believe conspiracy theory that they arrived, in secret, from outer space. From a far flung ocean planet. Chance would have it, so they believe, that our own sea is a decent immitation. Close enough anyway.

"Go on," she nudged him with a toe, "Have a drink with me. Just one. Please?" She grinned. He drank in her polished blue toenails. She didn't wear stilettos anymore, not here in the booth anyway. She didn't like them and didn't want to wear them, so she shucked them the moment the curtain swung behind her.
