A Pocket Watch is a Barrier
I‘ve been looking all over the sea. It is still terribly cold. All I can find are dark corridors and overwhelming amounts of coral and debris. They are bursting through the familiar pipes and dressers that I once touched. The drawers that I put my clothes in are barren.

When I first spotted a single gray hair on my head, I was 21 years old. Immediately, I rushed to the store to grab a box dye that would wipe away its existence after 30 minutes of setting. It was a quick fix, a way to wash away the signs that I was stressing myself out.

The plastic glaciers are melting. In case anyone is wondering, my grandma has a small pond with aritificial ice covering the surface in small patches. It has been sitting in her tiny backyard since the 40s, with little mounds of fake glaciers around its border. It is only a decoration, but an odd one at that.

Bull Stamped Coin
Every night at the library, it rained in the corner between the borders of fiction and nonfiction. The same drab raincloud, grey and small, would hover over Julie as she put away the book returns. Julie was in her early 30's, average, and still single to the disgust of her only living relative. She didn't plan on going after some prestigious career, or collecting friends to go out with on Friday nights like every adult should. All Julie desired in life was to be quiet, kept under the rug or placed on the back burner of all thoughts. Not to be noticed was key. Even if the library job didn't make a lot of money, she enjoyed doing something so humdrum in order to meet her basic needs in life without any further stress.

The Land of Green Stomachs
I had a dream last night after hearing Sonia's story. A sea of green stems covered the fields below the dipping hills and gray mountains. The perfume of marigolds stretched far, and their scent was carried by the gentle wind through the strands of my messy hair. I looked into the distance, eyeing what my abuela called "the land of green stomachs." It was an area of rich soil where vegetation would thrive, a symbol of vitality and nutrients being soaked through nature's veins.

ℭ𝔥𝔦𝔠𝔞𝔤𝔬 𝔉𝔢𝔰𝔱𝔦𝔳𝔞𝔩𝔰 The most notable memories I have of pre-covid life are the summer nights on 18th street. There were myriad Mexican festivals to attend that popped up throughout my vacation months, and for years I had always ventured out to experience the sweet aromas of my comfort foods. From the "Fiesta del Sol" to the "Mole Festival", these events took place in the streets of Chicago's primarily Latinx neighborhoods. Vendors, musicians, and booths full of Mexican wares lined the sidewalks, showing a taste of home for many immigrant families.

Even though Camila Cream loved lima beans, she refused to eat them. Credit: David Shannon Her friends and classmates despised lima beans, which made Camila feel like she shouldn't like them either. So, she gave them up! Ultimately, this story is a classic case of peer pressure doing its job during elementary school.
