Does Reading Make You A Smarter Person?
It’s tempting to think reading makes us smarter, but not necessarily. It certainly makes us more aware and knowledgeable than the person who doesn’t read! However, reading makes us smarter only if we absorb what we read and then utilise it.

Savouring a Personal Feat With The Booker Prize Winners
To say I love reading probably sounds trite and clichéd. Who doesn’t? you might be tempted to ask. However, perhaps I am obsessed with books, both fiction and non-fiction, and so took a keen interest in the British Booker Prize award some years ago. It soon became obvious that only certain people became judges - the known literati - who then chose the books in their own image, likeness and opinions of what deserved to win. Often I gazed wistfully at the growing list of winners wondering when I would see someone like me as a Booker recipient. I just couldn’t imagine how long I would have to wait.

Does Physical Beauty Really Matter?
The constant goal of looking beautiful is in abundance everywhere, especially among women. The global cosmetics market was valued at $262.21 billion in 2022 and is expected to expand even further. In the United States itself, the cosmetics market is worth an estimated $49.2 billion, while the average American woman spends $3,756 per year on beauty products and services. This includes makeup, skincare, haircare, and fragrance.

Why Do Some People Fall In Love With Others Who Cannot Love Them Back?
People who tend to attract others who are incapable of loving them are simply conforming to the Law of Attraction: that we attract who we are, not what we expect! If they don’t love themselves, they are likely to attract people who don't love themselves, either, and if they haven't got self-love, how can they love anyone else? Where would they get the love from?

Should Making Money Be The Measure Of Self-Worth?
Did you know that, in the United States, the average CEO income is way higher than that of average workers. In 2021, the average CEO of a S&P 500 company made $18.3 million, while the median worker made just $58,260. This means that the average CEO was paid 324 times more than the median worker. In fact, the CEO-to-worker pay ratio has been steadily increasing for decades. In 1965, the average CEO made only 20 times more than the median worker. Twenty-five years later the ratio had increased to 59-to-1. And in 2021, it reached an all-time high of 399-to-1.

Elon Musk Misses The Irony Of His Latest Well-Meaning Proposal
Elon Musk has made another announcement again, perhaps indicative of an ego-boosting kind of power his money gives him. According to the BBC, "he will pay the legal bills of anyone who is treated unfairly by their employer for their activity on his X social media platform" (like posting or liking tweets). This financial assistance would also have 'no limits'!

My First True Love?
I was 19, very green, naive and a little shy, and had recently arrived in England from Jamaica to do nursing. The mayor of the local town of Kings Lynn had put on a welcome get-together for all the overseas students to meet up, to prevent them feeling too isolated. I was surprised to see a guy wearing a turban, and looking very haughtily at me and my friend. I found this funny because we had never met a Sikh in person before, and he seemed fascinating. We went to mingle with other students and I later found out that he was a junior airman at the local airforce base about 18 miles away.

7 Key Reasons Why Some People Procrastinate
Trying to motivate someone who is reluctant to act is not such an easy task for anyone, as the procrastinator will usually find a handy excuse for their delays. However, one would need to start with the reasons behind the need to procrastinate. Remedying a particular situation is not possible until we understand why we do certain things, and how we can alter our mindset and perspective to change those habits.

A Moment That Changed My Life!
I was very quiet and introspective from as early as I can remember, because my father made it very clear that he didn’t want girls (who would only amount to nothing), while boys did the trick for him, and he suited action to the words, too. It meant that for me and my sister, we might as well not have been there. He left our mother soon after we were born, starving us of love, affection and care. He barely wanted to give anything towards our upkeep after he left home, and I often wondered how our mother coped with us during those harsh times of few jobs and no welfare.

Goodbye 50s... Hello 60s!
(Last year I recorded these thoughts on the eve of my birthday.) Today is the last day of my 59th year. It is also the last day of my sixth decade and it feels a little strange. I cannot believe that 10 years have gone by so quickly. But at the pace at which I breathe, think, grow and live, everything feels like being in fast forward! Exhilarating and simply amazing.
