Being a "Big Toe" Leader
For many of us "of a certain age" (meaning that we carry an AARP-card in our wallet), we fondly remember the movie Stripes, which came out—believe it or not—almost four decades ago, way back in 1981. Stripes became a huge box office hit, and went a long way in helping Bill Murray become, well, "Bill Murray"—a comedy legend and yes, now a golf brand.

The Fight in Little Phoenix
Trust me. We parents have all been there. The setting could be a sports field or a kitchen table. The matter at hand could be trying to hit even a slowly thrown baseball or calculating the answer to a problem that begins with something like "If one train left Topeka at 7 AM going 70 miles per hour, and another..." We have all seen our children either be on the verge of tears or into full-blown hyperventilating crying out of the simple frustration of not being able to do something—whatever than something may be!

Would You Like a Whopper with Your Traffic Jam?
We have all been there. You are sitting there on the highway. You are surrounded by a sea of other cars. You cannot see any discernible reason as to why you and hundreds, perhaps thousands of other drivers are just sitting there. You might have hope for a few brief seconds when you slowly inch along, and then boom, you are sitting stationary once again!

A Most Epic Branding Fail
There I was. Just killing time on a weekend roadtrip while riding in the passenger seat, as my wife drove on the interstate. I was doing what many people “of a certain age” do while a passenger, not traveling "the road less traveled," so long as their phone has a charge, and they have signal. I was pretty mindlessly scrolling Facebook. And on this particular morning, fortunately there wasn’t anything “really” important going on in the world. Of course that didn’t keep my “friends” from having a virtual fight over Trump “stuff!”

Shall We Dance in the Open Kitchen?
One thing about the world of marketing today is that it is a constant challenge—for all companies everywhere—to be able to break through all the clutter and the noise of our modern world and to get their message out successfully. One can dream of creating an ad that wins awards, shooting a commercial that becomes the talk of talk shows, or making a sales video that goes viral. However, there is always a bottom-line when it comes to advertising. And while awards are great, and yes, they can bring those responsible for them in the advertising world prestige, more business—and yes, higher rates, from a business management perspective, the best advertising effort is one that does what it is supposed to do—to find eyeballs and to eventually to sell!

The "HGTV Effect"
“History never repeats itself, but it rhymes...”— Mark Twain KEY POINTS IN THIS ARTICLE The housing market today is being driven, in large part, by those who are flipping homes. With 1 in 10 sales coming from house flippers, the highest level since—oh yeah—the housing bubble burst a decade ago. House flipping today is more profitable than in the past, driven in large part, not by rampant speculation, but through remodeling and updating older homes, which is very beneficial for communities. There does appear to be a media-driven aspect to all of this, propelled by the popularity of shows—particularly on the highly-ranked HGTV network—making all of this appear relatively "easy." Does this add-up to an "HGTV Effect?" If so, what does this portend for the housing market, and for the economy overall?

Scenes From the Retail Apocalypse
Remember the classic "death scene" from the movie Deep Blue Sea (can the movie actually be 20 years old now?), where Samuel L. Jackson's lead character offers sage advice to his cohorts, who are trapped under the ocean with him, along with a huge shark? The iconic actor delivers this sage advice, just before he shockingly gets eaten mid-soliloquy:

Part 1—What is a Restaurant Today?
So, you want to open a restaurant? Well, you are not alone. In terms of new business startups, restaurants are always—always—at the top of the list. Why? Because many people simply want to be restaurateurs. Maybe it's because they are actually—or believe they are—good cooks. Maybe it's because they have their mom's "secret" family recipes. Maybe it's because they are actually trained chefs. Maybe it is because they have worked for other people's restaurants and want to take what they've learned and put that knowledge to work for themselves. Maybe it is because they want to make a bunch of money. And maybe, and it's often the case, people see themselves as being "the toast of the town," celebrated for being the proprietor of the new, "it" place to be on the dining scene.

Advertisers Are Warming Up to Smart TV in a Big Way
To me, as a strategic management consultant and professor, cord cutting has been a learning opportunity. I must admit that at various times, I have felt both like alternately the leader—and the follower—in a post-apocalyptic "follow me to freedom" scenario.

Walls Do Work!
It is nothing less than amazing! If you had to guess what was the top-rated, non-Trump News 24/7/365 network in cable television, most folks would say, "Well, I guess it must be ESPN!" However, for a couple of years now, the "secret sauce" in gaining all important eyeballs for desired demographics (meaning middle-aged, relatively affluent consumers with money to spend!) for advertisers has been a simple, four-letter acronym—that being HGTV! Americans seem to drawn to their formulaic programming, as HGTV consistently rates as the most-watched cable television channel—outside of the pro- and anti-Trump news channels, of course.
