'Ready Player One' A Cautionary Tale?
So, Ready Player One opened in North America yesterday to what appears to be pretty good reviews, which is no doubt exciting for the book's author Ernest Cline, but it would appear that there are messages within the film that should perhaps give those viewing it some pause.

#DeepState: Ellen DeGeneres Just Doesn't Have the Time for It
Sorry, #EricTrump — #EllenDeGeneres just doesn't have time to be part of the #DeepState. Apparently in an effort to illustrate that worries about being betrayed and undermined are a family affair, Eric Trump, President Donald Trump's middle son, suggested via Twitter that the talk show host was part of something called the Deep State. Noting that Twitter suggested he follow Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as well, he hashtagged the tweet #DeepState, and when DeGeneres caught wind of the tweet, she was willing to break her usual rule of not discussing politics to explain that she was not a part of Deep State. In fact, she initially said that she hadn't had an idea as to what it was.

A (Controversial) Explanation for the New 'Star Wars' Trilogy
I'm a huge fan of Star Wars; always have been. I love the escapist nature of the films, the hope, the action, and yes, even the love in the stories, and that will never change. I was not a big fan of the prequels. They have their place, and always will, but they too are important to Star Wars lore and history. I have not read very many of the Star Warsnovelizations, whether they are of the film adaptations or otherwise. That said, I have enjoyed what those have brought to the Star Wars universe as well, as I think the history surrounding the franchise only becomes richer for them.

#CarrieOnForever: A Year Since We Lost Carrie Fisher
I took #CarrieFisher's death hard, as so many people did. December 27th, 2016. It wasn't until I became an adult that I gained true appreciation for Carrie Fisher. When I was a kid, she was just Princess Leia from Star Wars, and at around ten years old and a staunch tomboy (I prefer the term "strong female" now, thanks), I just did not get her appeal. In looking back, I suppose that it only makes sense that I didn't really "get" Carrie Fisher or her significance to women then—I was, after all, only ten, and had only gotten into Star Wars within the last two years before that, having been only four when A New Hope first came out and shook the stratosphere.

'The Last Jedi': What's The Matter, Luke?
I am not what you would call a person of faith. I believe there's some sort of higher power, and I respect everyone's right to believe in the higher power of the religion they follow, but I am not exactly someone who feels compelled by any one religious tenet. I try to live life as any decent person would, with regard for my fellow humans on the planet, because I think that's what humanity should be about. I also believe that at times, one's faith can get shaken, and shaken hard. During those times, I would imagine it's more than a little difficult to keep strong in one's faith.

'The Last Jedi': A Film Worth Loving
I don't get people who are saying that The Last Jedi ruined Star Wars. I knew I wouldn't be getting a typical Star Wars movie the second Luke said in the trailer that "it's time for the Jedi to end." I actually lost sleep over that line — thanks, Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill. I was practically panic-stricken, wondering what exactly I was in for when it came to Episode VIII.

Trump's Forbidden Words: 'Fetus,' 'Transgender' Among Them
From the files of the insanity that is the Trump administration comes news that there are now certain words that are no longer supposed to turn up in any official documentation. Thanks to the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, the public at large can see the words that are deemed so terrible that they can no longer appear in government documents.

Carrie Fisher, 'The Last Jedi,' and Nuance
I will preface this by saying that there will be #nospoilers in this post about Carrie Fisher and #TheLastJedi. Watching The Last Jedi was a surprisingly emotional experience in some respects. I've always enjoyed watching Carrie Fisher as everyone's favorite galactic princess; she was feisty and tough and every bit the fearless female that I hope my girls grow into being. Certainly, as my family and I were lined up for the 9:30 pm showing of The Last Jedi, I was not particularly thinking that this would be Carrie Fisher's last cinematic ride, but the moment she stepped on screen, it hit me.

Thank You, Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill - thank you. I have been a fan of your Star Wars work from the moment you stepped on screen, and I will admit, I felt cheated at the end of The Force Awakens. Your entrance just 58 seconds before the end credits started rolling left me stunned; just what the hell was happening?

Sexual Misconduct and the Presidency: Reality Bites for Trump
Even as photographic evidence continues to mount that President Trump did, in fact, at least encounter the nearly 20 women who have accused him thus far of sexual misconduct, the party line continues to be that everyone else is lying but him.

Trump's Travel Ban Gets Preliminary Supreme Court Approval
President Trump's blatant dislike of anyone of Muslim descent seems to have gotten support from the Supreme Court. The president's travel ban, which in its various forms has attempted to block the arrival of Muslims from six Muslim countries into the United States, has been a hotly contested one since he first put it forward not long after taking office. With various judges across states blocking the travel ban with the argument that it was unconstitutional, if not prejudicial towards the Muslim community, it comes as some surprise that Supreme Court justices have by a majority allowed, at least on a preliminary basis, for the travel ban to pass as it stands currently.
