How Brightly Shines the Moon
In all the years I had known him, I had never seen him more heartbroken. The way his head hung low, the utterly lost look in his eyes, tugged at my heart. I wished that there was something, anything, that I could say, but I knew that I would have to be careful, very careful, not to anger him. His name was Jacob, and he was my husband. He had just lost the love of his life, my younger sister, Rachel.

Seeing Is Believing
The elderly physician had been loved by many, and there was great mourning when he died. Some said he was a miracle worker, an angel from above sent to rid the world of birth defects and childhood maladies. His glory would live on for long after he was gone - or so it was said.

The Truth Comes Out
Seth's fifth birthday was in the middle of June, and we had a party for him at the pizza place with the arcade. I invited Cara, his cousins Rachelle and Duncan, the Shikov children, and several others. Fortunately, Maxim and I were both able to get the day off, so we loaded the kids into the car and drove to the restaurant. Seth was so excited that he did a little dance in the parking lot before we went in.

My Sore Butt
Morgan recovered from her operation quickly and was fine within several days. Spring break came, and Seth was out of school for a week. On our days off, Maxim and I tried to keep him busy with trips to the park, the zoo, and movies. On Friday I bought baskets full of candy for the kids and a couple dozen eggs to dye different colors for an Easter egg hunt. I spent most of Saturday evening boiling and dying them and sitting them in holders to dry.

Happy Anniversary
Christmas dinner was at Mom and Dad's the following day. All of us got tons of nice things, and nicest of all were the little clay rocking horse ornaments with their names on them that Mom had made for the twins. "They're gorgeous!" I exclaimed. "I'm gonna keep them forever."

Gentle, Sweet Love
Before I knew it, it was time for the kids to start school. The elementary school bus came for Seth about thirty minutes before Morgan's four-year-old kindergarten bus came, so after seeing Seth off, I returned home for fifteen minutes, then left again. I could tell that Morgan was just a little nervous on her first day. As she stood there in her new yellow dress with the matching bow in her hair, i could see the apprehension in her brown eyes.

Holiday Celebrations
We decided to take the kids to the fair that year. Seth could walk on his own, and I pushed Morgan in her stroller. We stood in the long line at the ticket booth while Seth excitedly jumped around and talked about all the rides he wanted to go on. "The roller coaster...the tilt and twirl...the swings...the bungee jump..."
