"You know, I've been thinking," Amber said to Danny. "Don't overdo it," he teased. It was in mid-July, and the two of them, along with Trey and Jade, were lying on quilts on the beach beneath a blazing Florida sun. Danny had transported the four of them to Pensacola Beach, and they were enjoying the white sands and the surf.

Quickly, Alexei jumped to his feet, grabbed Nevada, and held her over his arm. He gave her several sharp slaps on the back, and a half-chewed bite of hamburger flew out of her mouth. She gasped for breath and then began to cry. Alexei held her tightly and comforted her. "It's all right, baby," he whispered over and over.
