Dune Prophecy
It seems a little fast but we are in fact at the end of the first season of Dune Prophecy. We can only assume that they planned on this being more seasons because there is simply no way to wrap up all of our loose ends in this one final episode. So far the show has done an incredible job of giving us background into the rise of the Bene Gesserit and of the beginnings of House Harkonnen. I am very excited to see how the first season of this new series ends. So let’s dive into the Dune Prophecy finale.

It Ends With Us
It Ends With Us is a property that has always been surrounded by controversy. The original book has often been criticized for romanticizing domestic violence. Unfortunately that was something that was not fixed when adapted into a movie. It was only made worse. A lot of the issue actually surrounded the film's lead, Blake Lively. The internet finally caught on to the fact that she is truly a terrible person. Watch any interview with the Gossip Girl cast and you will see that none of that core group could stand her. Then we add in the fact that she went after Ryan Reynolds while he was still married. Sprinkle in the fact that they got married on a plantation. And top it off with the fact that they are both scabs who continued working during the strike. So when she used the promo of a domestic violence movie to promote her haircare line I was not in the least bit surprised. Framing it as a rom com was just icing on the shit cake. All that said I genuinely had to force myself through this movie.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice has always been one of my favorite films. Tim Burton’s early work is some of my favorite in film and I truly think he was an incredible director at some point. But that point has long since passed and I think sequels done over 2 decades after the original are desperate. They are desperate attempts at reclaiming prestige and cash. And though Jenny Ortega was an undoubtedly incredible choice I don’t think casting is enough to overcome a truly unnecessary film.

A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place is pretty well regarded as a horror film, but like most movies made in the last decade they just kept deciding to make more of them. Let’s remember that not all movies need to be franchises and not all stories need an “origin”. That said they kept making them anyway so here we are watching A Quiet Place: Day One. The saving grace of this movie is the fact that Lupita is in it. She can do no wrong so the movie can’t be that bad. But Hollywood loves to disappoint me so let’s see.

Creature Commandos
James Gunn’s first release of his DC universe is the animated series Creature Commandos. Now this series centers once again around Amanda Waller using prisoners to do her dirty work. The thing with this is that it really makes it look like James Gunn is incapable of building a team without using Amanda Waller…or incarcerated beings. It just inherently feels repetitive but as this is a new age of DC I will try to keep an open mind.

Emilia Perez
Emilia Perez has been talked about a lot lately, and not necessarily because of the film itself. Some controversial statements were made by a Mexican actor about Selena Gomez’ Spanish in the film and she got dumped on. The statements that he made could not at all be considered constructive criticism, he was straight up hostile. Selena fans then attacked him in turn. Now as someone whose Mexican family is fully colonized, I don’t speak Spanish, I can mostly understand if you talk to me slowly but that’s all I’ve got. All that said regardless of how you felt about her Spanish in the movie, any ire you feel should be directed at the writing and the very French director. Selena didn’t make word choices. So let’s get into Emilia Perez.

A Sacrifice
Movies this year are either a tight hour and a half or nearly 3 hours long and there doesn’t seem to be a solid in between. The problem here is that the movies that are an hour and half could benefit from being another 30 minutes long and the ones that are over 2 hours could easily cut 30 minutes. No one seems to know where their story’s sweet spot is anymore and that is just a major bummer. Now this was a short rant in response to A Sacrifice but it could be applied to just so many films this year.

Joker: Folie à deux
Well this is going to piss off some people and as always, I don’t care. The first Joker movie was garbage. It was not a good film, it was an even worse comic book movie. And anyone that enjoyed it is an immediate red flag. That’s why when they announced the second one I could do nothing but roll my eyes. But when they announced it was a musical I could do nothing but laugh. Because the demographic for musicals are the exact opposite of the demographic for the Joker movie. And I knew it would piss off the basement dwellers that made that film their whole personality. And boy was I right. So regardless of how this movie actually turns out, whatever quality rating I give it I know that the Joker-bros hated it and that fills me with immeasurable joy.

The Apprentice
Well folks, I watched it so that you don’t have to. Perhaps one of the most controversial movies of the year we’ve got The Apprentice starring Sebastian Stan (interesting career move there bud). Now I want to preface this by saying that I will be taking politics completely out of my review. I will be doing what I always do and analyzing the film as objectively as possible. I will not be bringing any personal feelings into this review. This is ONLY about the elements of the film.

Smile 2
Of all the films that didn’t need a sequel, this one didn't need one the most. But here we are talking about Smile 2. A sequel to a film that literally could have been one of the most brilliant horror movies of the decade if it just didn’t keep going. It fell off hard at the end of the 3rd act which leads me into this movie with skepticism. I was wildly disappointed by the first one, it was sufficiently creepy and it almost had something to say but it just kept talking. So let’s see if the second one can do what the first one didn't.

Dune Prophecy
Dune Prophecy has been extremely fast paced thus far and they have packed a lot of story in a short amount of time. That said this is the penultimate episode of the series and as far as I know there is no news of there being another season. 6 episode is truly not a lot of time and I am not sure how they are going to wrap all this up in one more episode but here we go.

Conclave
So many thrillers this year. Among them is Conclave, another religious based thriller. I’m not opposed to them inherently, I just think using religious based thrillers is a little easy as religion is inherently creepy. Its ritualistic nature makes it extremely easy for a writer to build a story. Also, it's not like religion has always been some pure, unblemished thing. As a writer, it just seems simplistic, which can be a good thing when executed properly.
