Godzilla X Kong

Review

When Godzilla X Kong came out this year I was excited because I love bad monster movies. The only Godzilla movie I have ever seen is Godzilla Minus One which is absolutely not a monster movie but perhaps one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. So I was ready for some dumb monster shit. This is your friendly reminder that I judge movies for what they are, I don’t expect every movie to be a cinematic masterpiece. I am expecting very little plot but some cool monster fights, if I get that then the movie will get a pretty high rating. It’s called managing expectations, and it's something a lot of you need to get better at.

Okay we knew this movie was really just gonna be a CGI fest and it definitely is. But it's very inconsistent. Some of the CGI looks really good, whatever was flying at the very beginning was super terrible.

We are dealing with “hollow earth” which is a wild and weird escalation but it's not like we expected brilliant realism from this movie so it's about right.

Apparently this little girl can communicate with whatever supernatural thing is happening. The need to put children in these movies has always baffled me. For what reason are we including 12 year olds in monster missions? It feels really forced and out of place and extremely unnecessary.

So this is a world where all titan like monsters exist and they are showing us as many as possible. A little curious about the budget for this movie, though it does explain the inconsistency in the CGI. You want most of your money, and your best work to go into your main monsters.

So the big monster we’re all afraid of is just another monkey? And he’s not even bigger? Why? Also I was totally right and there really is no plot here at all. The trailers really made it seem like Godzilla and Kong were gonna fight whatever the big bad was together, but so far it's Kong with a side of Godzilla and absolutely no relation in their stories whatsoever. There is also this really random romantic B plot that is super out of place and completely unnecessary.

I don’t know man, I think that they were trying to do too much with the other titans. I think if they had just kept it to Godzilla and Kong teaming up against a bigger bad then the movie would have been a lot better. But we kind of went off the rails with trying to include as many monsters as the budget allowed. Trying to tie in cultural significance was a mistake. A child being the key to this last fight was also a mistake. Also the last fight went on for way too long. I really think they only moved the fight to the surface so you could see the scaling of the monsters. When they were in a world that was meant for them, they really just looked like they were normal sized animals, especially compared to each other. It was certainly a movie, I think they could have streamlined the story a little more. It was a little chaotic and overcrowded and for that reason I am taking off a few points. Even as far as fun, pop-corn flick monster movies go it was a little disappointing. I give it a 5.5/10 there is no rewatchability factor. The monster fights were cool, they were just repetitive and there were simply too many monsters. I would also love it if monster movies just stopped trying to have a plot because the forced, shallow plot they try to shoehorn in is so much worse than no plot at all.

I watched it the other day and I must have missed something between the last one I watched, with Millie Bobby Brown and this one. In the spirit of managing expectations though, I didn't expect anything more. it was a good waste of time. As for Godzilla Minus 1, the Hollywood franchise doesn't even rate a mention in the same sentence. I need to watch it again. Thanks Alexandrea
