Why Blown Away on Netflix Is the Cosy Competition Show You Need to Watch

AKA should I take up glassblowing?

I’ve just finished season 4 of one of my favourite competition shows. *Blown Away* is set in North America and each season, ten glassblowers compete to be *Best in Glass*. Each week there is a challenge, and someone gets sent home.

Unlike some other competition shows, there is no bickering or backstabbing between contestants, everyone seems to be really supportive of everyone else. It is quite a soothing, relaxing show to watch, and what they create is absolutely beautiful.

The biggest drama that occurs is when someone’s glass breaks, and it is heartbreaking. Slightly less dramatic is when it cracks, but both occasions require quick thinking from the contestants to pivot their ideas and what they can make in the remaining time. Each season also seems to feature one person who thinks they are better than everyone else and the competition is just a formality, but they usually don’t last too long! 😂

The series ends with two competitors each creating their own installation and making the most of their half of the display gallery.

Season 4 was a lot higher stakes, and a lot more difficult challenges, but it was as beautiful as always. I have no idea how they decided on the winner because I thought the installations from the final two were both stunning!

As there are only ten episodes each season, I make sure I savour them by limiting myself to one episode a day and watching without distraction (phone down!). Due to the timing, I got to enjoy this season with Easter eggs, the superior chocolate (see last week’s [post](https://sazfivestars.substack.com/p/easter-eggs?r=1f03vu)).

And of course, being me, each series ends with: ‘maybe I should add glassblowing to my collection of hobbies…’ But I know that is a terrible idea. I don’t even know how you get about starting, and I’m sure I don’t have the strength and stamina for that. Still, I’d love to try it once.

There are currently four seasons and a special Christmas season of *Blown Away* on Netflix. I highly recommend it!

What other cosy competition shows are out there that I should watch? I’m very tempted by *Forged in Fire* (blacksmithing) and *Lego Masters*.

Until next week.

Cheers

Sarah
