He found the radio while cleaning out the garage. Turning the dial, he came across a station he hadn’t heard before. Who would start a new radio network these days?

At first, he thought the announcer had the date wrong. However, he often muddled his dates and gave it little thought.

As he worked, he caught odd snippets:

‘Mighty House has won the Melbourne Cup.’

‘Milton Jones is the new Prime Minister.’

He didn’t follow the news closely, but eventually realised he was hearing events before they happened. He even placed a few bets. Nothing big, just enough for Friday night at the pub.

One Friday, he came home, modest winnings in his pocket. As he flicked off the lights and headed to bed, the radio played in the background.

Then, from the radio came the unmistakable sound of an air raid siren.

And then, static.
