I have finally found one! And it's a cross-stitching embroidery in the Byzantine style of iconography. I am so excited about this find!
When I moved to the country of Georgia in August 2025 for my one-year teaching assignment in Tbilisi, I was amazed by how many various depictions of St.George there were in Georgian churches and cathedrals. Some had not one, but two or three icons.
No wonder, as St.George is the patron saint of the entire country, depicted on its national emblem and proudly standing as a Tseriteli statue in the main public space of Tbilisi - Freedom Square.
I am “collecting” pictures of St.George in Georgian churches and cathedrals, to write a separate story later.
In the churches and cathedrals of Athens that I've been to, he is almost never represented. They revere other saints, such as St.Barbara and St.Peter, and various local saints. When I saw this icon of a saint on the wall painting (fresco) in Panaghia Kapnikarea Church, I was excited because it had the same spear-wielding enemy-piercing arrangement as St. George. But it turned out to be St.Dimitrios.

So I was really happy to see St.George embroidered icon at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, officially called the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. I hope you can appreciate its beauty.

So neat, Lana <3 Cross-stitch is amazing enough without adding that much detail. Great article <3
Incidentally the St Dimitrios image is almost exactly the same pose as the many depictions of George slaying the dragon is so many pictures and stained glass that I have seen in many churches around Europe. Too much of a coincidence and there must surely be a connection. In my current home, Beckenham in the London suburbs of Kent, the parish church is dedicated to St George
Wow! Delighted to see these images and to know that you are writing a separate piece on iconography of St George. I have always been fascinated by the mythology of this martyr and one of the first poems I wrote as an adult was inspired by a huge beaten silver wall mounted depiction of the many deaths of George. It used to be hung in the Victoria and Albert museum in London but is no longer there. I have written many stories about or inspired by St George and his red cross banner, also the flag of England. A couple more in progress. Was delighted to find a Polish store that sells a few Georgian wines in my new home on the Kent Coast. These may also figure in a story at some point. Thanks for sharing the treasures of your visits and enjoy doing the cross stitch. I haven't the patience.
Whoaaaa, that looks sooo majestic!
