French Impressionist artist Claude Monet was known for his loose brushwork and use of vibrant colors. He often painted outdoors to observe natural light.

Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat was created in 1874. The painting depicts a calm scene along the Seine River near Argenteuil. It focuses on the single sailboat gliding through calm waters surrounded by riverbanks and distant buildings.

The Artist’s Garden in Giverny is a painting created at the artist’s home. Monet spent a great deal of time in his garden and recreated the flowers and plants growing in his garden in detail. The flowers can be seen in varying colors, with the trees providing light and shade over them.

The Cliff Walk at Pourville is among Monet’s notable artworks created in 1882. The painting depicts a scene along the coast of Pourville-sur-Mer, a small village in Normandy. Figures can be seen strolling along the edge of the cliff, overlooking the vast sea. The artist captured the rugged beauty of the coastline with loose brushwork and vibrant colors.

Garden at Sainte-Adresse is one of Monet’s renowned paintings created in 1867. The painting depicts a scene from the coastal resort town of Sainte-Adresse, near Le Havre. It shows a lovely garden overlooking the English Channel with figures strolling among colorful flowers and lush greenery. The artwork is celebrated for its depiction of leisure and natural beauty, reflecting the growing interest in outdoor recreation and the appreciation of nature during the 19th century.

Haystacks is another in the series of en plein air paintings that Monet created. The series consists of 25 artworks, which the artist began toward the end of the summer of 1890. A similar scene is painted in each piece; however, Monet varied the times of day and the weather conditions as a way to capture how natural light significantly changed the subject throughout the days and weeks.
Impression Sunrise is among Monet’s most famous paintings. (pictured above) The artist created the painting in 1872 and it is credited with being the inspiration for the name of the Impressionist movement. The painting depicts the port of Le Havre, the hometown of Monet. The port is seen at sunrise with some fishing boats and in the background clipper ships with tall masts.

The Poppy Field was created by Monet in 1873 after returning from London and settling with his family in Argenteuil. There he preferred to return to painting landscapes, with this painting being among his most famous. It was there that the artist embraced en plein air painting in and around the countryside. His wife and son can be seen enjoying the poppies in the field.

Rouen Cathedral in Normandy was created by the artist when he had a temporary studio across the street from the cathedral. The cathedral is known for its impressive Gothic style. Monet gave detail to urban structures in regards to their relationship with color, light, and shadow.

San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk was created by Monet on his trip with his wife to Venice, Italy. He could see the island with the Pallasian Church, an important landmark, from his hotel window. He saw that the sunsets were splendid and created a series of six paintings in varying light conditions. He created the artwork from his hotel room and from the waterfront outside. However, he completed the paintings from his home in Giverny.

The Thames Below Westminster was created after Monet and his family moved to London, fleeing the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871. This painting is considered among his best artwork. In the artwork, Westminster dominates the right-hand side of the painting, and the Westminster Bridge creates a horizontal focal point between the river and the sky.

The Water Lilies is not just one painting; it is a series of paintings with 250 artworks in varying sizes. Monet spent a considerable time painting the pond in his garden filled with water lilies and a small bridge spanning it en plein air in Giverny. Monet painted several series of paintings that focused on the same subject matter, but it is Water Lilies that he will be most remembered for.

Woman with Parasol is a painting depicting the artist’s wife, Madame Monet, and their son on a windy summer day near their house in Argenteuil. Monet’s animated brushstrokes and vibrant colors bring the scene to life.
