French Impressionist artist Camille Pissarro was among the leading painters of the 19th century. The artist kept his paintings simple, letting them reflect his personality.

The Boulevard Montmartre at Night is one of the fourteen paintings created by the artist depicting the Boulevard Montmartre in Paris, France. His painting was created by looking out a hotel window because of an eye infection, and he had a problem painting outside. This is the only artwork Pissarro completed depicting a night scene including artificial lights along the boulevard in the northern part of Paris, making the painting come alive.
The Fish Market, Dieppe: Gray Weather, Morning is a painting that depicts the fish market in the commercial harbor of Dieppe. Dieppe is a coastal town in the Normandy region of France. The artwork shows the view the artist had from his third-floor apartment in this town. Fishing boats can be seen arriving and leaving, and people are checking out the catch of the day.

The Garden of the Tuileries on a Spring Afternoon is a painting that Pissarro completed the year after he spent some time at the Avenue de l’Opera. The artist moved to an apartment at 204 Rue de Rivoli, located directly opposite the Tuileries Garden, the large landscaped park west of the Louvre. He had a great view of the park and completed 6 views of the garden and 8 views of the side of the Louvre. The two towers seen in the distance in the painting are the Gothic Revival steeples of the Basilica of Saint Clotilde.

Hay Harvest at Eragny is a painting depicting the hay harvest in the small French town of Eragny-sur-Epte located in northern France. In the painting, the viewer can see several women harvesting hay. The artist moved to the town from his former home in Pointoise in 1884. He lived there for the rest of his life with his wife, Julie Vellay.

The Harvest, Pontoise is an artwork that the artist completed two decades later in Eragny-sur-Epte. The painting depicts farmers during harvest in the small village of Pontoise, where the artist formerly lived. These French farmers are gathering potatoes.

Jalais Hill, Pontoise is a painting by Pissarro created in Pontoise, a rural community northwest of Paris. It depicts the Jalais Hill and a natural landscape. This artwork help establish the artist as a landscape painter.

Place du Theatre Francais, Paris, Rain was created by the artist from a hotel room in Paris. It depicts a rainy day on the streets of Paris and shows Parisian life in the late 19th century. The artwork depicts a view down the Avenue de l’Opera, in the heart of Paris, leading from the northwestern corner of the Louvre Museum to the Palais Garnier, the home of the Paris Opera. The dome of the opera house can be seen at the end of the avenue.

Pont Boieldieu in Rouen, Rainy Weather is a painting completed during the final period of the artist’s life. The artist painted this scene from a hotel window. Pissarro had visited the city of Rouen in the early 1880s and created a series of paintings during this time. This artwork was completed in 1896 and was among the first true Impressionist paintings created by Pissarro.

La Recolte des Foins, Ergany, is considered to be one of the greatest artworks, offering an example of Pointillism, the technique of painting with small, distinct dots . The artist studied this technique with French artist Georges Seurat, who perfected the technique he invented in the early 1880s. Pissarro completed this artwork painting with small dots and line producing larger fields of contrasting colors. The painting was once owned by Theo van Gogh, the brother of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, who greatly admired Pissarro’s artwork.

Road to Versailles at Louveciennes was created by Pissarro in 1869, the year he moved to Louveciennes. This is a small village in the Yvelines department in the western suburb of Paris. The village is located just a few kilometers north of Versailles, where the Palace of Versailles is located. In the painting the road leading to Versailles is depicted in the winter.
