Who Are You?
What Happens When I Publish A New Vocal Story

Introduction
You may not believe it but there are days when I do not publish on Vocal. Today is not one of them but Wednesday 20th November 2024 was one. The number of reads that I get are usually fairly good, but not publishing usually shows a drop. I know sometimes I come across as obsessed with numbers but that is part of my nature and serves me well in my job as well.
So, My Observations
I do not know where most of my reads come from and I would like to know if you can tell me.
When I read stories from many contemporary friends I see that they very quickly have a lot of hearts and comments, generally I have five or six, but if I can get to see the reads the following day I find that usually it is significantly more than the hearts and comments that have received.
So I wonder who my readers are.
Is it Vocal contemporaries who don't rate my writing, if that is so then it is understandable that you don't leave a heart or a comment.
One other point is that simply dropping a heart doesn't mean a read, although I have stories with more comments than reads and recently found one that had no hearts or comments, so maybe it hadn't been read by anyone on Vocal but does have a good number of reads.
So if you are on Vocal and like the story enough to drop a heart, also leave a comment if you have time so I know who you are. If you do, you may get a reciprocal read from me.
If you are not on Vocal but read a few Vocal stories you can sign up for a free account here. You don't have to write but it means you can let me know when you read my stories, and also it will let me know where more of my reads are coming from.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading, and I really would like to know who you are and where you found this story.

I read and leave a comment and a heart for I seem to learn something even from a haiku. Good article.
I read stuff and comment when I can. I know I'm typically inconsistent with likes and comments because I'm usually reading between doing other things. Reading on Vocal is my grad school homework break or commercial break activity.
I am subscribed to you and often read your stories without interacting in other ways. Sometimes, I'll leave a heart, but I leave comments less often. I'll try to do better at that for you, but I don't always have anything meaningful to say, I'm aftaid.
Hello! 👋🏾 The whole thing of what qualifies as a "read" has always been a weird thing for me. I will mention this: if you are a quick reader, stay on the page for at least the time Vocal says it should take to read. That way it still counts for the writer.
All good points! I would love to know who all my reads are from.
Totally agree with you. I'd love for someone who read my piece to leave a comment so that I know who they are, thank them and reciprocate
I read your stuff, but I admit I'm not as consistent as I'd like to be. I am constantly writing myself and I obsess about editing my stuff. It eats away my hours. I am also going through a ton of personal stuff: changes in my brain chemistry due to prescribed drugs. Been trying to prevent seizures and seem to have managed that, but those drugs revealed I'm bipolar, and my new doctors are still experimenting with meds to manage that. I'll spare you further details. These meds also cause me sleep a lot. I am constantly on Vocal subscribing to new authors. So, the stuff that flows through my notifications is constantly growing. I see certain trends here, certain times when a bunch of authors drop stories simultaneously. Other times of the week/day, there is very little flowing through. I have a weird schedule. I'm now generally up all night and sleep away my mornings, not getting up til noon or afterwards. I find in the wee hours of the morning (my time), I see more stuff from authors outside the United States, in different Time Zones. I found this story of yours at almost 3:30 am. I also admit that because I have subscribed to so many authors... and because I concentrate a lot on my own writing when I'm here... I don't read everything by every author I subscribe to. I wouldn't have the time. I read a bunch of poetry, because it's short. But... Certain titles just automatically draw me in. That's how I landed here tonight. I'm curious about all kinds of things. I'm going through a kind of transformation right now. I constantly try to be self-reflective, self-aware. So the title "Who Are You?" pulled me in. I haven't heard that song by the Who in forever. But it was the title of this particular piece that drew me in. I'll read your stories as often as I'm able. _______ I wonder about where reads come from too. I have an old story of mine that has 1,479 reads.... but only 19 likes. Doesn't make sense to me. 🤷♂️ How is that possible?
Saw this on BlueSky.
Reader here!! *raising hand*
