How Our Stories Are Read

A Nightcafe Creation By The Author

Introduction

This has been kicked by a number of friends telling me they can't possibly read all my Vocal Stories. All my stories, for me, are a sort of library:

For everyone else, it is a different story....

So, What Is The Story?

When we read a newspaper or a magazine, we pick and choose the bits we want to read. These publications are not like books, which you generally do read all of (unless it is a bad book); you only want to read what appeals to you.

I pick stories that appeal to me either by the title or the author. However, if someone publishes a lot of stories together, and I am subscribed to them, I will choose one or two pieces for my enjoyment. I do admit someone once flooded my notifications with two pages of published stories, so I unsubscribed. Flooding notifications and Facebook feeds really puts me off.

When I publish, I do worry if I publish stories too close together, although sometimes I write things quickly, but this one was almost complete yesterday, and I thought I would wait til today before I let it out.

Because of the nature of feeds, we may just miss stories, so we can't be too upset if someone doesn't see our stories. Sometimes I share mine via direct message if I believe someone would be interested in a piece of mine.

I was slightly surprised to see a Top Story recently with no comments and two hearts, and it is a fine story (and still only has my comment), check it out here and let the author know you have been:

The title caught my eye, and I have seen the author on Discord.

Sometimes it may feel as if you are being ignored, but there are so many factors in play that the reason your story has not been read is that it has not been seen.

I always share mine on my Facebook feed, plus as many groups that I feel it may be appropriate in, which are often not Vocal groups.

Conclusion

Thank you so much for your time. I will try and read and reciprocate as much as I can, but even I miss a lot that I should give my attention to.

Remember, keep writing, keep creating, and keep believing in yourself and together we can do great things.

So very true and sound advice Mike. I think we all have to pick and choose3 otherwise you spend all day reading and never writing. My father was a person who read every page of the newspaper. To this day I never pick one up and read it.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mike. I just keep hoping.

I appreciate this. I have about 50-60 tabs open on my phone of stuff to read. I doubt I'll get to all of it, but it's not because I don't want to support people. Life happens, power on and keep writing even if you feel like you're yelling into the dark.

This is a pragmatic, encouraging piece, Mikeydred. Many will benefit from reading it, I think.

  • This is how I choose who and what to read because I just don't have the time, but I feel better that I'm not alone. Thankyou for another interesting article xx

I love this. I've had to unsubscribe from a couple of people because they were flooding my notifications but I seek out their work and read it when I can still. What a wonderful and encouraging piece you've written though - it is definitely like reading a magazine sometimes. I'm trying to get on top of reading as much as I can on here and I always love to see what you have written. x

  • Yes, sometimes I feel overwhelmed when a person publishes more than two pieces a day. But now I just choose to read one or two and that makes me feel better
