Waiting for a Challenge?

Got hooked on challenges, did you?

Many people first came to Vocal due to the Challenges and the hunt for a prize payout. (Those DO happen, no worries if that was your 'why'.)

As long as the Challenges keep flowing that tantalizing promise of treasure dangles before the creator/writer community, and together we churn and burn tinder for the bonfire of submissions.

What happens, though, to that spark of creativeness when the ~gulp~ Challenge pool dries? Such a time is (I am sure temporarily) here. There are no current Challenges from Vocal (I need to post this quickly because- Tuesday and this could change any moment). What to do when waiting for Challenges?

Honey- I GOT YOU.

Here's Three Things to do While Between Challenges.

Unofficial Challenges

Unofficial Challenges are spawned by Vocal creators. Sometimes there are pay outs, sometimes the gift is the glory of sharing your post. The fun of finding them is part of the challenge, but there are some shortcuts.

  • I suggest subscribing to Mike Singleton Mikeydred. Not only does he freely share tips, he also has the skinny on a LOT of unofficial challenges. I'd start here.
  • Belle is a creator that often runs unofficial Vocal challenges. Here is her latest.
  • Heck- I have one open (with no end date) and you can find it here.
  • Queer Vocal Voices and Proud ViM Productions have an unofficial challenge that will close soon (but there's still time to enter). You can find that here.
  • You can also try your luck with the Vocal platform Search bar and type in 'Unofficial' and see what happens. Even if their Challenges are finished you could subscribe to those authors and be in-the-know when they run their next one.

    Find the Prompts

Vocal has HUNDREDS of prompts for every type of writing! At the top of your homepage on Vocal click on Resources, then Tips and Guides. You'll find 8 titles to get you writing, including:

  • Fiction Writing Prompts: 200 Ideas to Kickstart Your Next Story
  • 100 Writing Prompts for Self-Reflection and Personal Growth
  • Compelling Story Starters: 120 First Line prompts to Capture Your Reader's Attention
  • 150 Poetry Prompts to Unleash Your Inner Bard
  • Waste Some Time Not Writing

I know. settle down. I KNOW, OK? What is there to do besides writing, ammiright?

There's a lot to do, albeit some of it isn't fun (like cleaning out the linen closet AGAIN and folding towels the WAY GOD MEANS THEM TO BE FOLDED- AGAIN!) which is why we aren't doing those things in the first place. But if you do the humdrum and boring things long enough your brain will spring into action and you will think of something to write. (How do you think THIS article came about?!?)

You might also try something that is advertised as the most useless one of its kind: The website of One Million Checkboxes. It's an interactive website where you click on a box and either leave a check or erase a check... while at the same time EVERYONE ELSE is doing the same thing. You can search for a particular numbered box and check/uncheck that (it leaves a colored border around the box. yes; I did explore to see how I could get a colored box. Mine was green.)

Why would you want to do it? I don't know. But it's there, and it's not writing, and it's quirky. And you can bring it up in conversation. Show your kids. Whatever. (again- I made a box with a green border today!)

At the very least, like a boring job around the house, it's meditative and might allow your mind to float about and come up with something that you can turn into writing.

I love to read your comments!

What do YOU do between Vocal Challenges? What color was your box?

I like the recognition here that it’s not ALL about Challenges. We definitely get caught up (I know I do) in waiting for the next one, but writing doesn’t need to stop just because there’s no prize on offer, and that’s a great reminder Judey😊

Some good tips and resources here. Mike you are writer of all writers 👏 ❤️

    • Thanks for this Judey, this is what I have been saying to people, great informative piece

I'm one of those writers who can live with or without the challenges and not all of them will entice me. Imma that "write what, where, and when I wanna write" writer. Having said that, I do feel for the people who are addicted and been jonesin' real bad,

    • Vocal challenges doesn't really impact my writing in any way because I write only when Mr Brain comes up with something hehehe

    • The Kittens Game is also a good time waster: https://kittensgame.com/web/

    • Just had a look at One Million Checkboxes! so simple but fun, Checkout the 'Paperclip Game' and push the button to make 1 paperclip-> https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/index2.html

I did not know about the checkbox website. I love a silly little website like that. My favorite is still cat-bounce.com though.

Nice! Great info here! And it’s great that we can now save stories for when we come across the unofficial ones!

    • Great article ✅… I find Challenges & Prompts helpful to give me a kickstart idea. Thanks for this info: “ At the top of your homepage on Vocal click on Resources, then Tips and Guides. You'll find 8 titles to get you writing”… I was unaware of its existence 😵‍💫.

    • Nice idea for something to write about. Not that I could win one, but they do make Vocal more fun.

Great share, Judy! I do enter the creator challenges sometimes; I LIVE and LOVE to read; right now it’s t seems there are thousands of stories pushed out daily so it is nice to take a rest from VOCALmania.❤️

I find it hard to keep up with the challenges, official and unofficial, to be honest, but I generally have not had a dry run for ideas in a while. Not a boast, more just facts. But, you offer a great resource here Judey! I got a red box, I think, but also got a green one and a brownish one? That site is some kinda fresh hell that messed with my symmetry. Loved it!

Amen to the unofficial challenges. If I was starting out on vocal and looking to get reads, build an audience, and maybe make some money, that’s where I would go.
