The Shrimp That Sleeps Is Carried Away by the Current (You snooze, you lose)

This poem belongs to Chapter 2: Latin American Popular Sayings with a Soulful Adaptation.

By Liora Vogel Published 6 months ago 1 min read

Are you on solid ground,

or drifting without noticing?

In this life,

if you’ve already recognized your frequency,

if you already sense your truth,

but still decide to swim in another’s direction,

following the current of society,

what are you really obeying?

The current drags you

when you don’t stand firm,

when you don’t know where you want to flow.

And that current isn’t clean water.

It’s fear.

It’s mold.

It’s imposed expectations.

It’s someone else’s voice telling you how to live.

But there’s always time.

The choice is yours.

Dare to be who you are,

even if you’re unsure,

even if the world doesn’t understand.

One day you’ll awaken,

put your feet in the stream,

and paddle with both fury and love

toward your ideals.

You’ll challenge the flow that tried to swallow you.

And if you keep going and don’t fall asleep again,

the moment will come when the current no longer carries you,

but you become the current.

You’re the cause, not just the channel.

You’re living, clear water that chooses its path.

Because currents don’t arise on their own.

There’s always a flow that starts them.

And if you navigate guided by your intuition,

you don’t just flow with your own current,

you also transform its direction.
