I’m Finally Writing on Vocal:
Why I’m Finally Writing on Vocal: A New Chapter & New Home for My Words Back in 2021, I made an account on Vocal after stumbling across something about making money online through writing gigs. Vocal sounded like an interesting opportunity, maybe even a chance to get a few pennies for my thoughts. But life, as it often does, had other plans. Everything sort of derailed for a while. I forgot all about this platform and it fell to the back of my mind as I tried to manage the chaos of my real life these last few years.

The Hill Between Heartbeats
I didn’t know I was breaking until I met stillness. For years, I moved through life like a ghost in a familiar house—mother, protector, survivor. My laughter was rehearsed, my smiles were armor. There was always something to do, someone to save, a crisis to manage, a fear to silence. I held my boys like shields against the world, even when the weight of everything threatened to buckle my spine.

🎓 Standing at the Edge of the Map On the college graduation lawn, I watched my classmates waving different offer letters like departure tickets to various futures. My mind flashed back to senior year of high school, to the countdown board pinned on the back wall of our classroom.

Every Step You Take Matters
🌅 Before the Dawn: Every Stroke Is a Signature of Time Standing under the auditorium spotlight, I found myself unconsciously tracing the edge of the trophy in my hand. In that moment, memories surfaced like film negatives developing in my mind’s eye—blots of ink on scratch paper, vocabulary lists blurred by morning fog, and the curled figure hunched under a desk lamp deep into the night.

When performance is measured against curated feed of perfection
Have you been to a performance review that inevitably ends up comparing you to popular Joe, charismatic Jackie or high performing Jack? Most formal performance reviews have sections where employees are compared sideways against peers within and outside their departments. Definition of a “peer” here is largely determined by a line manager who is assumed to have the power of veto to be able to understand the term, its correct application and most importantly the ramifications of its misuse. The review fails to appreciate that the line manager is just another fallible human being with no previous “human psychology” training.
