Journey 105: Turning Self-care into a Non-negotiable Practice

Self-care, Lifestyle? Or an Afterthought?

By the.selfcare.advocatePublished 11 months ago 2 min read
Self-love is a continuous journey

Looking back at Journey 101 to 104, I realize something profound: the biggest transformations in my life didn’t come from grand gestures or sudden breakthroughs. They came from tiny, intentional shifts—the little habits I once overlooked that gradually reshaped my entire world.

I used to think self-care was merely an event, a luxury reserved for later—a special treat only when I had the time or when exhaustion forced me to slow down. But now? Self-care has become the rhythm of my life. It’s woven into every aspect of my day: the way I wake up, the way I move, the way I breathe. Somewhere along this journey, self-care transformed from a casual afterthought to an essential, non-negotiable practice.

Yet, I can’t count how many times I’ve heard, “You’re doing too much,” or “Why are you so extra about these things?” But is it really being extra, or is it simply choosing to live more intentionally? To me, it isn’t about adding extra activities—it’s about seamlessly integrating self-care into everything I already do. And that's the real deal. Self-care is not about radically changing your lifestyle -its being even more intentional about your life.

For me, self-care is found in the smallest, most ordinary moments that accumulate to create a life of wellness and joy:
✨ Taking a deep, mindful breath between tasks instead of rushing through the day.
✨ Playing my favorite song during an occasional evening stroll, letting the soothing rhythm calm my mind.
✨ Pausing to savor every new treat I buy for myself—not just eating it, but truly immersing myself in the flavors, textures, and the overall experience.

And self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days. It’s embedded in the daily habits that shape my mindset and protect my inner peace. It’s in the affirmations that reset my thoughts each morning and the journaling sessions that help me process my emotions and dreams. It’s choosing to set firm boundaries without guilt, saying no when necessary, and surrounding myself with people who genuinely see and respect who I am.

Because the truth is, self-care isn’t always glamorous. It isn’t solely about scented candles and pretty aesthetics—though I do love those little indulgences too! Sometimes, it’s the discipline of doing what’s best for me even when it feels uncomfortable. It means choosing rest before burnout, walking away from situations that drain my energy, and prioritizing my well-being without waiting for anyone’s permission.

This is Journey 105, but it’s far from the final chapter. If you’ve been here since the beginning, you know that every step has been a lesson, a gentle reminder, and a discovery. And if you’re new here? There’s a whole story waiting for you in Journey 101 to 104—a narrative of a total transformation in my life when I began to let myself feel the little things. My raw and real story of self-love, continuous growth, and learning to care for myself in ways I never imagined possible.

So, what about you? Have you considered the tiny ways self-care can become a natural part of your everyday life? I would love to hear about it in the comments!
Instead of waiting for exhaustion to force you into rest, what if you embraced self-care as a lifestyle—effortless, natural, and deeply fulfilling? What if we just made self care a non-negotiable practice in our lives? What if we consciously choose to live intentionally while still dreaming about all the good things the universe has in store for us?

The journey doesn’t end here. Let’s keep going together, step by step.
