Hey, It's Me...
With a belated New Year's Wish
We're already a week into 2025 and it's long past time I wished all my fellow creators and friends on Vocal a Happy New Year. I haven't been dragging my feet, so much as recovering from the whirlwind of chaos brought by the closing weeks of 2024.
Though you'd never guess from that opening paragraph, I'm normally something of an optimist. That being the case, I tend to find not just the positive side, but often the humor in situations and events. If you've followed my writing, you've probably noticed that slant, and yes, it's due to my completely unbalanced mental processes.
Christmas 2024 was probably the last we'll spend here with my family in Texas for some time. We'd all planned on a nice day at the home of one of the brothers, enjoying potluck finger foods. On Christmas Eve, that brother went by ambulance to the hospital. His wife arrived at the same place by the same mode of transportation that evening. They are both back home and recovering, but the dinner of course, didn't happen. Pam and I had a nice, quiet dinner at home, and we rang in the New Year the same way, keeping our dogs calm while the neighborhood exploded.
One of the December highlights was seeing the number of copies of my book sold rise to 25. Sure, 2,025 would have been nice, (and a fun coincidence, right?) but that's okay. Most of the sales have been Kindle editions and that's okay, too. I also ordered some author copies and those have been signed and delivered. I still haven't kept one for myself, but I need to order more and will keep one of those. I'm incredibly grateful to the readers that have asked for them.
In regard to the number of sales, first of all, it's a poetry collection, which probably isn't going to be a best-seller unless you have a last name like Frost, or Dickinson or Poe, and/or the talent that goes with that. I hope the collection of short stories I'm working on now will fare better. It's a fun subject and to my knowledge there are only a few titles out there on the same, so I'm hoping there's room for a newcomer.
I do have one copy of my first book, and that one was sent by my good friends in Baltimore who ordered one of the first copies and got the hilarious misprint from Amazon's first run. Not only is it printed upside-down and backward, it's printed, title page, Table of Contents and all, at the end of a book that's printed in the correct orientation. The subject of that book is a proper post-surgery diet for kidney transplant recipients. It includes a diet planner and recipes, so if I ever find myself in that situation, I'm prepared!
Chad and Britt, my Baltimore friends, now have their own signed copy of the actual book and I'm sending the misprint back so they can sign it for me. It seems only fair, although they did send a nice Christmas surprise, too. If you're a fan of seafood and you haven't tried Maryland crab cakes, I highly recommend getting your teeth into one (or more). I'll add a non-affiliate link at the end of this story to the restaurant that made ours. Be advised, they aren't exactly inexpensive and have to be cold packed, so shipping can be pricey, but if you're interested in a treat worth splurging on occasionally, add them to your list.
Last, but most definitely not least, I managed to make a purchase last month that compromised my debit card. In the interest of full disclosure, I overlooked what should have been the first warning signs. I did not overlook the following signs: the bogus sender's email address for the receipt thanking me for my “entry,” the record of that purchase and the record of another. Neither had anything to do with what I was supposed to have purchased.
The fun part? The second purchase was from a wig shop. (Yeah, I could use some head cover, I suppose, but I'm not quite that vain.)
Naturally, I immediately canceled and replaced the card and I've filed a fraud claim with my bank. (No merchandise was received for either purchase.) With luck, I'll receive reimbursment after they investigate. Either way, I'll attempt to avoid shopping stupidly in the future. No, that's not a New Year's resolution. I gave up on those long ago.
And Vocal? Well, my relationship with it is still a bit lackluster, for reasons I'm sure I've ranted about in the past. On the bright side, I managed to nab a couple of runner-up placements in recent challenges. I've had a few recent Leaderboard placements and I've been grateful for those. Most importantly, I received wonderful comments and a couple of nice tips. Both of those things are priceless.
So, let me close by thanking each and every member of my Vocal community for helping make 2024 something other than the disaster it tried to be on its way out the door. Your support is why I'm still here and the biggest reason I'm working on the second book and planning another poetry collection. That one will be previously unpublished work and will have more pages than you can read in ten minutes. Meanwhile, I plan to catch up on reading all the stories I've missed and get back to publishing again.
If you're reading this, and even if you're not, I sincerely hope that 2025 brings you more love and laughter than your heart can hold. Pass the rest on!

Wishing you a belated Happy New Year and congratulations on your top story! I am looking forward to a much brighter 2025 as well and more time here on Vocal. I struggled with this platform for a while, dancing between staying and leaving, but I have decided to stay put. I've thought about publishing a poetry book, too, so I think the fact that you did it is pretty darn amazing.
Happy New Year for your Top Story
"If you're reading this, and even if you're not" lol! I'm writing more this year. I'd love to hear more from you, too. Have the best 2025 possible, much love to you and Pam. 💕🤗👍
Happy Belated New Year, Dana! Sorry I’m late to the party! I chuckled quite heartily at the misprint ordeal! Glad you’re prepared now to serve some post kidney removal diet friendly meals although I hope you don’t need to!! Wishing you a load of laughter and love for 2025 too!
Happy New Year. Enjoyed reading your piece, as usual. Do hope the family in Texas is well on the road to recovery and that you and yours did not suffer the same set backs. Hope 2025 offers you much on the road to new endeavors and growth. Ever on.
I missed your witty banter with words and stories that make me go.... Hmmm? Same as you end of 2024 was a busy but unlike yours, mine was wonderful, not spectacular or even great but wonderful. Ill see where 2025 takes me, unsure if full time Vocal is in the cards but we shall see. Cheers Dana, Ever forward
Happy 2025, Dana! Onward and upward….
Here's to the day when we can both say we've sold as many book as the current year 🤝 Also happy to have a friend in Baltimore with a signed copy of my book. The Baltimoreans always come through, don't they?
The part with the misprint made me smile! Congrats on Top Story Dana!!
Happy New Year. I hope 2025 treats you and yours well.
Well-wrought! I hope your kin recover well so that y'all can cash the rain check on those finger foods! You now have 26 sales. I ordered a hard copy for my personal library! Your poetry has always been excellent, and I'm sure it will have been a worthwhile purchase!
Happy new year, congratulations on your book, and glad to hear that your brother and sister-in-law are home recovering!!! Do hope you get the debit card disaster sorted out!!! Envious of the Maryland Crab cake gift from Maryland friends. Sweet of you for sharing the Restaurant info. Congratulations on your wins and this top story!!!❤️❤️💕
Welcome back, sir! 25 is a great number! Glad you and Pam are doing well! Looking forward to cheering you on and supporting you through the year! When you get a chance, you will see I put a review up on Vocal!
Twenty five copies sold is wonderful! Especially given the new year of ‘25 😇⭐️ May those numbers keep climbing merrily on high 🙏🏻
Congratulations on Top Story and on your book!! Happy 2025!
Okay I don't know if this is illegal, but hear me out. What if for your next poetry book, you use a pseudonym? Like can you use Robert Frost or Edgar Allen Poe as a pseudonym? Lol Anyway, I wish you all the best for your short stories book! May only good things come your way 2025 onwards ✨️❤️ Congratulations on your Top Story! 🎉💖🎊🎉💖🎊
Hope your new year is starting out better than the old one ended. All the best in 2025.
Congratulations on Top Story!!!
Happy New Year Dana! Congrats on all of your writing accomplishments!
Dana. Congrats on Top Story✨ I’m glad your family was okay and it’s always good to have good practice in optimism. I’d love notice of your short story collection so I can support. I’ll also add it to the growing list of independent authors works I’ll provide a review for in my monthly newsletter. And congrats on 25 book sold 🪅 It’s a great success! I’m born and raised in Maryland (still here) and crab cakes are one of my favorite foods. Glad you could try one and enjoyed it. Scammers are one of the worst groups of people society has to offer. Congrats on the placement and a big HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and your family 🎆 best wishes
Congrats on this top story...hooray for the new book, and happiest of new years to you
Best wishes for 2025!
Best of luck in 2025!
This is such a beautiful, reflective piece, Dana! Hope your brother and his spouse are doing okay, and that the new year brings you all the love and laughter too. Out of curiousity, are any more signed copies of your collection going to be distributed at any point in the future? I'll definitely be picking one up either way, but am definitely excited at the prospect of one marked by the maker! :)
Happy New back to ya, Dana! So glad to hear family is back home resting. And super congrats on the book sales and upcoming plans to publish more! Thank you so much for the well-wishes and for being an integral part of this community.
