D for Diaphanous
An entry for 'Letter D' in Penny Fuller's "The A-Z of Unusual Words Challenge"
First gotta follow instructions.
Challenge Rules House Keeping
I’m late to A, B, C, and D for Penny Fuller’s “The A-Z of Unusual Words Challenge”, but I wanted to try to join for the next letter and I get a kick out of checking off boxes in order. So, before I do competition E, I figure I should do A, B, C and D, even though I can’t vie for the top B-spots and that sweet $1 tip. I’ve already done letter A, B and C (which you can find here here and here) am chugging along now to letter D.
Presenting "The D"
I'm not going to lie, this one was tricky. All the words I picked were already taken by people in the challenge in the comments. Defenestration was my number one go-to but Angie the Archivist wisely snapped it up.
After going down through a list and seeing entrants had already nabbed all the words catching my eye, I knew that D was going to be harder than A.
I was going to settle on dziggetai, which is a "Mongolian wild ass", but I found myself making a ridiculous number of donkey jokes and butt jokes that would put a Venn diagram to shame.
To cleanse my childish soul I went with a word I'm rather familiar with but find elegant and lovely, and am just hoping its length means it's a new or unfamiliar word for some.
I present to you:
Diaphanous
1. Transparent or translucent; allowing light to pass through; capable of being seen through.
2. Of a fine, almost transparent, texture; gossamer; light and insubstantial.
3. Characterized by extreme delicacy of form: ethereal.
I have loved this word a very, very long time. I love the beauty of it. I love the ethereal natural. I love the delicate gauziness. If I call you diaphanous I am saying your glow is so encompassing that I can't help to be enthralled by you. Its an extremely soothing word and brings up images of chiffon rippling in a deific wind.
With that, here is an attempt at a poem for diaphanous.
Poem
Diaphanous
If memories were the only
sound
in a long gone
gossamer language I
would listen to the curve
of your cheek
~
wet mist makes water drops into
diamonds and
tears into perfect crystals cradling
the translucence of the record
needle that
transcribes you
into me

Delightful word… you captured its essence well ✅. Really liked: “wet mist makes water drops into diamonds.”💖
I love your poem, as ethereal as the featured word. Listening to the curve of your cheek is a phrase I'm definitely going to remember.
