Can You Do It?

Some Thoughts On Motivating Myself

Introduction

It may sound unbelievable, but there are many times when I feel that I am unable to write. At the moment I am writing another story for the Vocal L*pogram Challenge partially because it really is a true challenge, or that is how I see it.

Hopefully, the stream of consciousness I am going to unleash on you may give you the odd idea. If just one bit works for you then this will have been worth it on my part.

The music is "Keep On Moving" by Bob Marley because that is something that we have to keep doing if we are going to succeed in our goals.

So What Do I Do To Motivate Myself?

I often set goals and then I have something to aim for. The current story requires a thousand words with any with the letter "i". This si my fourth hit on this challenge, and the way I work it is that if I write fifty words, I can write another fifty, that makes a hundred, and therefore I know I can write another hundred. This is just an example of goal setting, although the main aim is to create something that people want to read, but it should stay with the reader for a while.

While I enjoy numbers I often start a story with the final paragraph and then my task is to find the way to the end and thus create the story.

While we can do microfiction these days, and I do create many of those, I do like to challenge myself to write a decent-length story or article. Ironically as this is just a few ideas that I want to share with you this is quite a short piece.

Although we have an ultimate goal of our published story, by setting smaller goals you can mark a path to help you along to the finished article. Mark chapter or section headings, which can then partition your work and make it easier to create because you are working on smaller sections.

Also, headings can make your story more readable, because the reader can see that they can stop at some defined point and pick up later. It's like chapters in books. I read books that have no chapters and it can become an awful slog.

Always allow your reader the ability to stop and restart.

Conclusion

These have just been a couple of observations based around my latest story. I hope it has given you an idea or two and is something that I shall revisit at some point.

Thank you so much for reading.

I suck at endings. I should try it your way!

  • I like how you start with the ending and the figure out how the story gets there
