10 Ways to Unblock Your Writing When You're Burned Out
Gentle mindset shifts and simple prompts to help you start again.
Writer’s block isn’t the enemy. Sometimes it’s your creativity asking for care instead of output. Whether you’re navigating burnout, motherhood, or self-doubt, here are 10 gentle ways to reconnect with your voice and start writing again.
Shift Your Mindset
1. You’re Not Lazy. You’re Tired.
Burnout looks a lot like procrastination. If your body is asking for rest, give it space before demanding more output.
2. Perfection Is Not the Price of Admission.
The first draft is allowed to be a mess. Think of it as clay, not marble.
3. Creativity Isn’t Constant—It’s Cyclical.
Just like seasons, creativity has quiet and fertile phases. Don’t rush the winter.
4. The Fear You Feel Means You Care.
Resistance often shows up when something matters. That’s not a stop sign—it’s a signal.
5. Writer’s Block Is a Sacred Pause.
Sometimes silence is your soul’s way of calling you home. Listen before pushing forward.
Prompts to Spark Your Voice
1. Write a Letter to Your Creativity.
Imagine it as an old friend you want to reconnect with. What would you say?
2. Capture a Moment of Aliveness.
Describe the last time you felt fully alive—in five sentences or less.
3. Finish This Line:
"I thought I lost my words when..." Let your truth pour out.
4. List 5 Things You Wish You Could Say Without Consequences.
No edits. No filters. Just honesty.
5. Start a Poem with This Line:
"If silence could speak, it would say..."
Final Words
You are not broken. You are in between chapters. If this helped, save it, share it, or revisit it on the days your words feel far away. You’re still a writer—even in the silence.

Some of these resonate hard for me. I wrote a bit about writers' block a couple of years ago (here, if you like: https://shopping-feedback.today/writers/new-musings-on-the-block%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%29. These days I just remember Pratchett saying it doesn't exist, and it was invented by people in California who can't write 😅 That usually cures me 😅
