Machu Picchu by Rail
A few years ago, when I was at university, I was always a little intrigued about the charity adventures they organised to Machu Picchu via the Inca trails. However, horse riding always took over and, along with working and university commitments, I was sadly never able to go. In 2017, I finally had the opportunity to travel around South America for a few months. There was no way I was passing up the opportunity to visit such an incredible place.

Southampton to Jersey
This was my first visit to Jersey and despite—or because of—the weather, I am looking forward to getting there again. My journey began at Southampton Airport. Once I had checked in, cleared security, and as experienced air travelers say "airside," I really felt my journey had started. I also still had another hour to wait before boarding.

Journey to the End
I began my journey up the cloud-capped mountain range when the twinkling stars were visibly scattered across the dark midnight sky. Encompassed by the infamous Bluest of Blues Lake, the mountain towered over all things immense and meager in the country. Bordering the footpath to the heap were rows of willow trees. The dark bark on the trees creaked eerily as the wind made the moss colored leaves of the willow hum to it a cry of disheartenment. The willows draped themselves over each other to form a fairytale-like arch over the entrance to the mysterious forest. Nailed to the ground was a wooden sign that simply read:

Best Places to Visit in Costa Rica on Vacation
Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries located in Central America. Daytrip: Saguaro National Park
Just outside of Tuscon, Arizona is the Saguaro National park. 143 square miles of natural desert with trails and drives allowing you to enjoy the park from the comfort of your own car. One of the many national parks in the United States Park system, Saguaro National Park is conveniently located outside of the bustling city of Tucson. The park is located on either side of the major metropolitan hub, complete with an airport. The Saguaro National Park and the surrounding desert (called the Sonoran Desert) is the only place in the world where you can find the Saguaro cactus, making it a truly unique place to visit. During the summer, there is very little wildlife during the day but if you visit around sunset you may see lizards, rabbits or even a deer (like we did). Like Joshua Tree National park, Saguaro National park is surprisingly green for a desert park and in springtime the wildflowers must be amazing. We arrived there in late summer, after the major blooms had faded, however, many of the cacti still had remaining blooms on their crowns.

Christmas Lunch, Shipping Disasters and the Hadron Collider
In the marine insurance industry based at Lloyds of London there was a tradition that whenever there was a shipping disaster the ‘Lutine Bell’ would be rung to mark the event. The UK hospitality industry does not have a central forum like Lloyds but if it did and also had its own bell that bell’s clapper would be well and truly clapped out on Boxing Day after our Christmas lunch experience.

Travel the Small Towns
You have to learn how to step into the world of living in small town every now and then. This is a story about a small town in East Texas called Lufkin. It is seated in Angelina County. You don't hear about it much unless you are looking at the NFL draft or something, because Lufkin can produce some really good football players. It's a small town North of Houston and South of Dallas. Lufkin is that perfect small middle ground of a town. It offers everything you need, to be honest. Shopping, downtown shopping centers, and even things like a Walmart and Sam's Club (Sam's is like a Costco, for those who don't know). This small town is less than 30 minutes away from Nacogdoches. It's called the oldest town in Texas. However, Lufkin has so much to offer. The downtown scene is far from small. You've got shops that offer anything from antiques, to coffee, wine, and other things like personalized shirts and Yeti cups. Believe me, somehow that is still a big thing here in Texas. There is a coffee shop called Standpipe Coffee House. It gives you that great hole-in-the-wall shop feeling, but it really opens up once you get inside. It also offers some outdoor seating around the doors. The area plays a local radio station through the streets so while you do a little shopping and walking around, you get to enjoy some tunes as well. Also, if you like wine and flatbread meals, you should try out Restoration Wine Bar. On Saturday they offer $3 Sangria—house-made Sangria, at that! It's amazing! I'm not a big wine drinker, but it's so smooth with the perfect sweet taste from the orange slice. You can tell it was made fresh that morning and chilled just in time to open the doors. Lufkin offers so much more. It's very historic in its own way.

Hiking Around the World!
Over the last few years, I have been lucky enough to go on many hiking adventures around the world. For me, it's a great way to experience to outdoors and nature. I use this time to be alone with my thoughts, and be away from my phone. Hiking is a great way to reflect on life, and escape your troubles.
