The Last and Only Eastern Prairie
It is hard sometimes to remember when you live in suburbia, that there are mysterious and haunting nooks and crannies. Hempstead Plains is one such place. It seems impossible, for those of us who were there before the mega stores and shopping centers, that everyone appears to have forgotten the old Long Island. Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic is commemorated by a sign, right in front of Macy's in Roosevelt Field Mall. That sums up our history from the developer's side. Today, we must make a stand to preserve what remains of the only true prairie east of the Appalachians.

A Waddle in the Woods
On a sweltering Friday morning in July, we woke up at zero dark thirty and got ready to head out on our adventure. Our group was myself, my husband Greg, and our neighbor Lou. Greg and Lou are both experienced hikers and backpackers. I would say that while I'm not a beginner hiker, I lack in experience. The longest hike I had ever done was about 10 miles. And this chubby girl was ready to collapse at the end of it. This adventure was to take us two days and over 21 miles. I had never gone backpacking before, so I was nervous. Thoughts swirled in my brain about what we would encounter along the way. I was worried about missing my children, Ella (4) and Rory (1). In the days, weeks, months prior I had done quite a bit of hiking and biking and water aerobics, just to build up some strength and stamina. I was ready... gulp!

Glacier National Park/Avalanche Lake: I Went for a Little Stroll in the Woods Yesterday
Let me start this out by saying that this is the first time in a long time that I have done any serious hikes with elevation. In fact, the last time that I did, I was maybe 5-years-old in Germany in the Swiss Alps.

Zion National Park
Imagine climbing the steep switchbacks, watching the start point become more and more alien until you cannot even distinguish it anymore. That is hour one. Hour two brings you through a beautiful flat canyon carved through the mountain itself. The kind of canyon where it feels like the walls are ready to collapse on you. The canyon gives way to yet more steep climbing with grandiose views and startling drop offs. This is not a place for your kids. You see Angels Landing in the distance, with its harrowing chains, and notice it's small beneath you. You have come far, but you're only half-way. The next time you check your watch, it's the start of the third hour. "Is this mile two or three? God, I hope we're close."
