Ypsilanti is a small city in Southeast Michigan. Some call it Ann Arbor East, but that could not be further from the truth. Ypsi (as it is affectionately known) has its own vibe and culture that is very different from its more famous neighbor. It even has its own university, Eastern Michigan University. Maybe the football team isn't as fearsome as the Wolverines, but they're ours.

The Girl Scouts Saved My Life
“Would you like to buy some cookies, Mister?”  I turned to see the girl scout. She was about eleven years old, her auburn hair pulled back in a ponytail. She wore a dark green shirt and khaki pants. A light green sash decorated with pins and medals was draped across her chest. She smiled up at me, showing braces. She stood behind a table loaded with boxes of Girl Scout cookies. I stopped at the table and examined the boxes.

Stepping in from the Cold
The frozen wind is bashing the heat out of life itself as it barrels down the Ottawa River from the north, freezing the small town of Hudson, Quebec, along its way. A couple of feet of snow cover the ground and more clings to bushes and trees. Snow crunches under tires and under feet.

The Golden Village Rachol
Rachol, also known as Raitura is a village in Salcete, Goa, in south-western India. It is located on the left bank of the Zuari River and is home to the famous Rachol Seminary. The famous Portuguese colonial fort of Rachol has been completely erased, leaving behind the traces of the moat and the main gate. The village has many heritage structures and is an important site to study the history of Salcete. The Church of Our Lady of Snows (Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Neves) at Rachol is said to be the first church of Salcete and is called the Matriz of South Goa. Ilha de Rachol (Island of Rachol) is a part of the village.

Magic on the Madawaska
As I step off the trail, my boot presses down on a spongy 50-year-thick mat of decaying pine needles and blackened birch leaves. All I can smell are pine trees above and decay underfoot. It’s crisp and clean and at the same time a bit moldy. This pine scent is something many companies have tried to bottle but have never quite duplicated.
