Renaissance Man (part 2 of 2)
Continued from Part 1 Heizer has managed his career extremely well. Besides his large earth works, He has continued his dialogue with a series of drawings, print issues and smaller sculptures made in his shop and studio at The City in Nevada. He is prolific and well received. The sale of these smaller works supports his basic operating and living expenses. DIA Foundation has provided the funds for the construction of The City and probably has now taken on ownership.

The Comeback
The Riviera, largest hotel in Las Vegas, was one year old. Las Vegas had just announced that the city, population about 25,000, had brought in two hundred million in gaming revenue the year before. The Strip was seeing unprecedented development, as names of celebrities, on many marquees, dotted the Boulevard. It was the same month Grace Kelly had made her first Vegas visit, promoting To Catch a Thief with Kerry Grant. This was the end of April, 1956.

Bankable Brilliance
You may have noticed that banks don't appear to be all that bright. When I wrote an article on the most prevalent banking scam in history back in 2010, I was not surprised by the hundreds of attacks and dozens of threats that blasted back at me through the computer screen. After all, it had been perpetrated so successfully, governments had fallen for it, and so had banks, dating back to before the internet, when it was perpetrated by fax. Some consumer victims were so committed in their submission to that confidence game as to have stretched their participation, and hopes of payoff, across two generations. To call the bluff was to shatter the dream.

Selfie Absorbed
Meg was a beautiful grad student, about a year older than me. We were laying on the floor of her dorm room at Columbia University. She rolled toward me and we kissed. With my free hand, I took a selfie at the perfect moment. The photo looked as if someone else snapped it.

Among the artifacts of the Liberace Museum Collection is a magnificent grand piano which dates from 1830, known as the Royal Bosendorfer. One of the finest pianos of the romance era, it was famously played by composers Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahams, and Franz Liszt - a favorite of Liberace.

Thriller Villa
The Arrival In the dead of a winter night in late 2006, not far from downtown Las Vegas, a shining black Cadillac Escalade pulled off a major boulevard onto a darkened side street, heading with purpose down the lane. Two hefty body guards in the front seats eyed the terrain, as the vehicle sped past custom homes on ample lots, toward a large private compound. In back, three sleepy children and their father, a man of vast wealth.

A Pioneer, Uptown
The bell rang inside the service station as a young woman pulled her white Plymouth Valiant up to the gas pumps. As the attendant approached, she signaled him to fill it up. With gas pumping, he moved to the front to wash her windshield, and noticed the woman had kids in the car. The four of them were silent, but the woman was crying.

Saving Spring Mountain Ranch
"Jon, it's time to get up. Let's get a move on." My mother always loved the sunrise. I sat up in bed. It was a cool, spring morning, in Goodsprings, Nevada, 1974. I was about to turn 10. A little heat was coming from the wood burning stove outside my bedroom door.
