Wrong Place, at the Right Time
The Wrong Place, At the Right Time Many years ago, my husband and I traveled to Hawaii— Oahu to be precise. The trip was the farthest we had ever traveled from home. We stayed on Waikiki Beach and enjoyed every minute of our eight-day vacation. We swam in a lagoon, just the two of us, kicked back at the hotel pool, and signed up for a few trips around the island and one trip to the big island of Hawaii. Everything we saw and did was absolutely perfect. We took a moonlight cruise around the bay and ate roast pig at a luau. We tried to learn the hula but gave it up when we laughed so hard, we couldn’t stand up much less dance.

I unexpectedly survived
I had decided to put away the cares of the day and indulge myself in a leisurely stroll down a well known path. It was fall and the leaves had all but fallen, leaving the trees bare to the sight. It was a warm day with only a gentle breeze blowing.

Out of Place at Home
Growing up, I always felt out of place. I just never really fit in. I didn’t like overly girly stuff, so I didn’t fit in with the girls. And I wasn’t a boy, so I didn’t fit in with the boys. On top of this, I was the tall kid. The overweight kid. As a six-foot seventh grader, whose figure did not conform to the acceptable petiteness of preteen girls, my time in middle school was fraught with feeling like the ultimate outsider. Always removed from the socializing that was happening in the circles a foot below me.

It is something that is prevalent across the world. The main capital city or the cities that live within the said country are despised. They are different. They are on the news more and people tend to be afraid of what is different. I was the same.

Miscalculating the difficulty of trail running
Okay, so a tiny bit of personal history. I’d consider myself a fairly active person. I'm a single mother of two rambunctious kiddos, one with autism. I’ve completed two 5k foam fest obstacle courses. I’m the ambassador for a local all girls hiking group called “hiker babes”. I enjoy pretty much all things outdoors; hiking, swimming, running, kayaking, fishing, you name it.
