The camping trip

Changes

By Paul MeyersPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

It was a hectic week, work was just one bad expierence after another, the owner was getting really grumpy with me so I decided to grab my tent and sleeping bag, fishing pole and take a couple of weeks and enjoy nature.

Looking at the map I decided to hike into an area that has some lakes and is not so high up in the mountains. My brother took me to the trailhead and dropped me off. Walking along the green valley following the river up the valley was a relaxing time so I took it slow, finding some nice places to try the fishing out.

During my fifth cast into a pool that had a swirling area and a calm area, I hooked something that jerked my pole to the left hard. Letting a little line out so I did not break the line and lose the lure I played that fish to the shore, grabbed my net as it came into view. I ended up jumping in with my net and captured one of the largest fish I have caught for many years, crawled up the bank, and clobbered my dinner.

Being wet and frozen from that water I scouted around the area and found a nice flat spot to set up camp. Changing into my only spare dry clothing and hanging the wet so it will dry my next task was cooking that fish up for dinner. It took me about an hour to clear a safe area around so I could make a nice little fire to dry out and warm up. The sticks and grasses I found were plenty to getting that fire going so sitting back and taking out my old cast iron pan that fish was fried up in no time.

Having a full stomach, the sun setting to the west with a beautiful hue, the view from the ridge was beautiful. Seeing it was getting dark the trip down to camp was slow, finding my tent a nice sleep was had that night since I wanted to get up around dawn and hike further up. Falling asleep with the river flowing a short distance was relaxing and the dreams began.

During the night since the meal was sitting in my stomach and the exercise that was done to the body, my dreams consisted of some growling, which woke me with a start. I shined the flashlight around to scare any animals that might be lurking around, while seeing none I decided for a short walk since the moon was shining bright. Making my way up to the spot where I watched the sunset the sun started lighting the sky, watching the sky come alive was astounding, starting in a light glow turning pinkish to the white puffy clouds and blue sky while the birds making the calls back and forth.
