Some treks test your stamina, some test your spirit, but a few manage to touch your soul—and for me, Kodachadri Trek did exactly that. Located in Karnataka’s Shimoga district, Kodachadri is not just another hilltop hike. It’s a mystical trail through dense forests, hidden waterfalls, open meadows, and finally, a ridge that rewards you with one of the most magical sunsets in the Western Ghats.

Stepping Into the Wild – The Trail Begins

The trek to Kodachadri starts like a secret whispered by the forest. As I began walking, the air felt heavier with moisture, the ground softer with moss, and every rustle made me curious about what lay ahead. Unlike Himalayan treks with alpine charm, Kodachadri has a raw tropical energy.

The route most trekkers take begins near Kollur village, a small but vibrant town about 20 km away from the peak. It usually takes 5–6 hours to reach the summit, depending on your speed and the route you choose. What I loved most was how quickly the scenery kept changing—thick forest trails suddenly giving way to vast green meadows, and then climbing up rocky stretches with breathtaking views on either side.

A Secret Treasure – Hidlumane Falls

Midway through the trek, I encountered the gem of this trail: Hidlumane Falls. Reaching it required a bit of scrambling over slippery rocks and weaving through narrow forest paths, but the sound of gushing water guided me like a compass.

When I finally stood in front of it, the falls cascaded down in tiers, mist kissing my face, and the cool water washing away every ounce of fatigue. It felt like nature’s way of rewarding trekkers for their effort. If you’re trekking during or right after the monsoon, this spot is nothing short of magical. I spent a while here, dipping my feet in the icy water and soaking in the serenity before continuing onward.

The Final Climb and the Sunset Spectacle

The last stretch to the top is steep, testing both stamina and determination. Clouds swirled around me, sometimes cutting visibility to just a few meters, and then suddenly clearing up to reveal endless rolling hills.

When I finally reached the Kodachadri summit at 1,343 meters, time seemed to pause. The sun was beginning its descent, painting the sky in fiery shades of orange, pink, and purple. Below me, the valleys were carpeted in green, and far in the distance, the Arabian Sea shimmered faintly.

This wasn’t just a view—it was an emotion. No wonder Kodachadri is counted among the best sunset treks in Karnataka. Many trekkers even camp overnight here, just to wake up to the first rays of sunrise breaking through the mist.

Beyond Adventure – A Spiritual Connection

What makes Kodachadri unique is that it’s not just about trekking—it’s deeply spiritual too. Legends say that Adi Shankaracharya meditated here, and you’ll find a small temple dedicated to him at the peak.

Nearby lies the famous Mookambika Temple in Kollur, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South India. For me, this blend of spirituality and adventure gave the trek a special depth. It wasn’t just about conquering a trail but about connecting with something bigger—nature, history, and culture all at once.

If you have extra time, nearby attractions like Nagara Fort and the Sharavathi River backwaters are worth exploring, making the trip more than just a trek.

Best Time to Visit Kodachadri

Choosing the right season can make or break your experience.

September to February: The ideal time, with lush greenery, pleasant weather, and clear skies.

June to August (Monsoon): The waterfalls roar to life, but trails become muddy and slippery—recommended only for experienced trekkers.

March to May (Summer): The heat can be harsh, and the landscapes dry up, making it less appealing.

I personally recommend October to January for the best balance of safety, comfort, and natural beauty.

How to Reach Kodachadri

Reaching Kodachadri is part of the adventure itself.

By Air: The closest airport is Mangalore International Airport (about 150 km away).

By Train: The nearest station is Kundapura (around 80 km from Kollur).

By Road: From Bangalore, it’s around 400 km—a road trip of 8–9 hours. Overnight buses also operate to Kollur.

Once in Kollur, you can either trek the full route or hire a jeep ride up to the base point if you want to shorten the journey.

Travel Tips, Budget & Safety

Kodachadri isn’t a technical trek, but preparation is key. I kept my backpack light yet practical—carrying water, snacks, and a rain jacket since the weather is unpredictable. Trekking shoes with good grip are a must, especially near waterfalls.

Budget-wise, this trek is surprisingly affordable. A weekend trip from Bangalore usually costs between ₹3,000–₹5,000, covering transport, stay, food, and basic trekking expenses. If you join a trekking group, packages often include a guide and camping.

Safety-wise, always trek with at least one companion or a group. The dense forests can get confusing, and mobile networks fade quickly. Hiring a local guide is a smart move if you’re unfamiliar with the region.

A Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Day 1:

Depart from Bangalore by night (overnight bus or car).

Day 2:

Arrive in Kollur by morning.

Freshen up and start trekking.

Visit Hidlumane Falls on the way.

Reach the summit by evening for the sunset.

Camp overnight or take a jeep back to Kollur.

Day 3:

Visit Mookambika Temple in Kollur.

Explore nearby spots like Nagara Fort.

Return to Bangalore by evening.

Final Thoughts – Why Kodachadri Stole My Heart

As I packed up my tent the next morning and began descending, I realized Kodachadri had given me more than just memories. It was a reminder of how adventure, spirituality, and nature can exist in harmony. The chirping of unseen birds, the icy splash of Hidlumane Falls, the golden glow of sunset, and the quiet prayers at the temple—all of it blended into one unforgettable experience.

If you’re looking for a trek that’s both challenging and soulful, with a mix of adventure, natural beauty, and culture, then Kodachadri is waiting for you. It’s not just a place you visit—it’s a journey that stays with you.
