If you visit the charming city of Chiang Rai in Thailand, there will be several good ways to get about. In this city, you will have the opportunity to choose from modes of transport such as songthaews, rented private vehicles, tuk-tuks and so on. Described below are the ways that you will be able to get about in Chiang Rai and visit some of its key attractions.

By songthaew

The numerous songthaews are a popular means of getting around the city of Chiang Rai, particularly for locals. Songthaews happen to be modified pickup trucks featuring a couple of benches installed at the back. You will find that most fixed-route vehicles are colour-coded and will operate in the manner of a shared taxi. All that you must do is to signal one to halt, confirm that it will take you to your desired destination, check the price and climb aboard.

By tuk-tuk or samlor

An easy way of getting around Chiang Rai would be by taking a tuk-tuk, especially for short distances. This mode of transportation will be very convenient as these three-wheeled vehicles can easily be hailed from the street and they will take you to your desired destination. As with most tuk-tuk rides, it would be advisable to arrive at a price before commencing the journey.

Another alternative would be to take what is known as a samlor; this is a traditional three-wheeled vehicle differing from a tuk-tuk since the driver doesn't rely on an engine but operates on pedal-power! These are better for when you need to reach nearby places of interest and makes for a fun experience on your Chiang Rai travel adventures.

By bicycle or on foot

For travelling comparatively shorter distances like exploring within the city, hiring a bicycle would be a good choice. While you will find establishments where you could rent a bicycle, some Chiang Rai boutique hotel options including the likes of Hotel Sooknirund, lend bicycles to guests which add to the convenience factor. You can easily cycle to the downtown area and see the sights and soak up the local culture. Furthermore, it provides an ideal way to head off on a trip to the countryside where you will find idyllic landscapes amidst old-world charm.

Of course, Chiang Rai is also great to explore on foot. You can wander around markets, purchase unique souvenirs, mingle with locals and savour delectable Thai street food. Amongst the best places to do this is the Night Bazaar where you will find all manner of items for sale from hill-tribe crafts to local cuisine, while cultural performances can be witnessed as well.

By taxi

Visitors will find that Chiang Rai has fewer taxis in comparison to other sizable Thai cities. It offers a convenient way to get to the city from the Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport, though check if your hotel offers transfers. Apart from using taxis to reach the main city centre from the airport, many travellers opt for samlors or tuk-tuks within Chiang Rai.

By rented vehicle

If you desire to explore the environs of Chiang Rai and further afield in an independent manner, you could opt to hire a scooter, a bigger motorcycle or a car. It will often be possible to arrive at a reasonable rate by booking the vehicle weekly or perhaps monthly rather than daily. However, it will be necessary to have the required insurance and license to hire a vehicle. If opting for a scooter or bike, make sure to use a helmet and be mindful when travelling since you may get motorists who do not always keep to the established road rules!
