How to Enjoy a Solo Getaway to Xiamen over a Weekend
Solo travel
There is no greater adventure than the thrilling ride of a solo trip to a place you have never been before. The idea of finally exploring roads, stores and landmarks that were only figments of your imagination at one point in time is truly exhilarating. People will more often than not dream about going on a life-changing solo trip. Here is how you can get started!
Why choose Xiamen for the journey?
The city of Xiamen is well known in China as a place for major educational institutions as well as its reputation as the second most suitable city for living in the nation. With its coastline and the surrounding countryside, there are plenty of stunning vistas that attract local and well as foreign travellers to their city. With a mixture of attractions showcasing the city’s cultural heritage as well as being a huge draw for nature enthusiasts, the city enjoys a large number of tourists visiting each year.
Make a stop at the Hulishan Fortress
No trip is ever complete without diving into the history of the location they are visiting. Xiamen is no different. With a past as a major defensive outpost, the fortress itself was at one point stocked with heavy artillery. Multiple major cannons were purchased by the Germans that are now considered to be a rarity. So much so that the German’s themselves are requesting that the 28cm Krupp cannons be sold back to them for preservations!
From this fortress, you can also enjoy a stunning view of the Dadan and Erdan Islands. As you walk through the fortress you will see the clear influence of western architectural design in the creation of the fort, a pleasant contrast from the surrounding buildings.
Take a break at Zengcuoan Village
If you are looking to explore the city and surrounding landscapes at your leisure, then it is highly recommended that you rent a bike and do a bit of exploring through the city. If you are staying at a Xiamen serviced apartment such as the Somerset Software Park Xiamen, they will be more than happy to help you locate where exactly to find a place to rent a bike to begin your journey and also give you tips on the best attractions in the area to head to during your rides.
When you are ready, make your way about 2km down Huandao Road until you arrive at the rustic little village that is Zengcuoan. This seemingly sleeping fishing village is very much preserved in time with the entire town still perfectly showcasing architecture from many decades ago.
It has, however, become a hugely popular destination for many travellers due to the nearby university complexes and is also wildly popular with the younger generations. The streets are narrow and crowded as people drift in and out of the many stores that line the sidewalks.
This is undoubtedly one of the best places to grab a bite to eat or take a day trip with a set of friends when in Xiamen!
Check out coffee street!
If you are looking for somewhere to unwind during the night time, there are some places you have to check out. For example, Coffee Street is the perfect spot filled with little hipster cafes serving late-night lattes for the weary traveller. You can find a shop with a nice outdoor sitting area, get yourself a cup of brew, and spend the night reading a novel. The streets are also a stark contrast from the more traditional areas in the region so you are likely to find many other travellers that you can strike up a conversation with as well!
