The Ultimate Packing List for a Cruise Adventure

By Gabriel Alejandro Hernandez RomanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Are you getting ready for your first cruise? Congratulations! You are in for the adventure of a lifetime. However, preparing for your first cruise can be overwhelming, especially if you're prepping for a family.

When traveling in any method for the first time, there are questions about what you are and aren't allowed to bring. Likewise, you might be worried about overlooking an essential item to pack.

Don't worry! The following article will give you a comprehensive idea of what you should pack for your cruise. We'll also give you some tips on how to pack everything! Keep reading for some basic yet essential tips.

Questions to Ask Before Packing:

There are a few basic questions you need to get the answers to before you begin packing. The first is finding out which cruise line you will be aboard. Different cruises have rules about what is and isn't allowed, so understanding their packing rules is a critical first step.

Next, ask yourself how long the cruise will be. Packing for a three-day cruise vastly differs from packing for a fourteen-day cruise. The same is true for understanding the type of cruise; are you heading north to Canada, or are you going on a Caribbean cruise? These details will help determine what clothing and accessories you should pack.

Now, consider the activities involved. Are you signing up for special events requiring particular gear or clothing (e.g., swimming, formal dinners)? Recall if you or your family need any medicines or other essentials. Make sure these items make it to the top of your packing list. Packaging an additional three days' worth of medicine is also recommended to account for travel delays or emergencies.

Finally, ask yourself what other means of transportation will be required to get to/from your cruise. For example, if you're flying, consider airline rules and regulations.

Cruise Baggage Policies

While all cruises have different rules, most allow travelers to bring (at least) one carry-on bag with them while they board. All other luggage is sent directly to your cabin, so there is no need to worry about it. This is done to streamline the boarding process, as a massive number of people must board before the day is over.

Some cruises may limit the number of suitcases you can bring. Even if there is no limit, remember that cabins are generally smaller. As such, you don't want to bring so much luggage that you can't comfortably move around the cabin.

Packing Your Carry-On Bag

Your carry-on bag should contain everything you need for your first day on the ship, including valuables, medications, and other essential items. This way, you'll still be okay if your luggage is delayed.

Essential items to pack in your carry-on include jewelry, valuables, electronics, cruise/travel information, documentation (passport, etc.), and medications. You should also consider packing some other basics, such as sunglasses, hand sanitizer, basic toiletries, sunglasses, a bathing suit, etc.

Packing Your Luggage

Now it's time to pack your luggage. Your luggage should contain everything else you need for a cruise, including clothing, hair and skin care products, etc. There are a few ways to pack your luggage for a cruise. If you've ever taken a vacation, you already know what is needed.

Pack enough clothing for the whole trip, including your planned adventures (fine dining, swimming, etc.). Also, consider what laundry supplies you need (if any) and any other accessories (hairdryer, umbrella, etc.).

If you're still feeling lost at this point in the process, consider printing out a cruise packing list. Your cruise line likely has a list like this on its site, making it a great starting point.

Packing Tips

Avid travelers likely know the following packing tips, so they may feel free to skip this final section! First tip: use packing cubes! Using packing cubes is a fantastic way to get the most out of your suitcase space. They also keep everything organized. Watch a few videos on how to fold clothing to utilize these cubes.

Next, rely on your carry-on bag. Pack it to your comfort level, but ensure you have everything you can't afford to go without. This way, should something happen to your luggage (unlikely, but it does happen), you won't be in a bind.

Pack with variety in mind—a cruise calls for different clothing than just swimsuits and tuxedos. You'll likely need a little of everything, from casual to formal wear, leaving room for activities.

Finally, remember to pack yourself some layers. Even if your destination is a warm one, you may find some of the common areas to be on the colder side. Giving yourself options will leave you most comfortable.
