Swimming Against the Tide
I’ve lived in the UK since 2006 when I first came over for graduate school. Every year the immigration rules became more stringent, sometimes in surprising ways. For example, when I realised that the rules had changed when I wasn’t looking and would no longer be eligible for a tier one work visa after my PhD. This was because I’d spent my entire final year focused on my PhD (or severely depressed and unable to focus on anything, as is so common in academia) instead of part-time working and earning the minimum income threshold for tier one applicants. Now on the cusp of becoming a citizen, this journey has been the most dehumanizing, dispiriting, and wearying experiences of my life, touching deeply and painfully on my personal identity. I’ve hesitated to share my story because though I experienced it as great hardship in my life, I am still one of the lucky ones. I approached the process with the most possible privilege one can have. Though it was difficult for me, realistically my experience was by far one of the most painless of all the migrants of my acquaintance, and far, far easier than the journey that many others experience.

My Walk Through Selma, Alabama
Despite the hundreds of miles that I had already walked with my daughter, I was not prepared for Selma. The subject never came up. We traveled west from Montgomery, Alabama. Montgomery seemed like a nice, unassuming town. It was a nice place to be. Arriving in Selma, it felt as though the hands of time had been turned back. Here, the extreme poverty was much more evident. People worked very hard for everything they had. It was amazing what a difference 54 miles could make.

Another year of movies has come and gone, and 2018 has left quite the impression, surpassing 2016 to become the biggest year for movies at $11.9 billion at the domestic box office, with plenty of surprises to boot. There was Black Panther becoming the highest-grossing superhero movie in North America, Infinity War hitting $2 billion worldwide, a Queen biopic making more money than several tentpole films, a Star Wars movie bombing at the box office, the sixth installment of Mission Impossible dodging sequel rot, and Aquaman quickly rising up the ranks to become the highest grossing movie of the DCEU. All things considered, it's no surprise that 2018 did so well, and looking ahead to 2019, it promises to be bigger and better.
