Where are politicians who believe?
Why is it that only the far left- who want to end democracy- have a clear plan?
In Britain the last real conviction politician was Margeret Thatcher. Whether you agree with her policies and programmes- most people find some bad but a lot good in what she did- it is self-evident she actually believed in what she was trying to do. She had a clear vision of what would be best for the nation as a whole, she may not have achieved it, but she had conviction of what was right and wrong for the nation.
Since her we have had a collection of career politicians, no matter what party they came from, they have all been much the same.
To a career politician, being in power is more important than using the power for the benefit of the nation. These are the politicians who do not lead the government “machine” they use it but never lead it. The party apparatus and the unelected establishment ( of top legal judges and the department mandarins of the civil service) join forces to prevent change, to prevent any real power given to the democratic majority. This is why the Brexit vote came as such a shock to this cosy establishment, it is why they were totally unprepared for the results in this vital decision. They really did not expect, or even understand why, “the people” would vote against their “status quo.”
We need to change from the present system of selecting our political leaders. The route through school to university to study politics or social studies then to working for a political party or union as researcher, script writer etc. then to selection as candidate for a constituency they have rarely visited much less lived and actually worked in, Then through the ranks of parliamentary mediocracy to a junior government position. Getting along with the bureaucracy and not making waves gives then the much valued “safe pair of hands” label. From there to a cabinet position or, if in what is nominally the opposition, a party leadership, and so to being the Prime Minister. No real-world experience, no real conviction as to the best future for the nation. They are skilled politicians only within the very limited and introvert world of British politics but have no understanding of the way the vast majority of the indigenous people live, think, or what they wish for.
At the moment the only saving grace is our constitution. The Royal Family are outside of this system which guarantees mediocracy in political leadership. They may not have any actual government power, but they are trained from birth in how to represent the nation and as such they safeguard that nation’s identity.
How can we get back to governments who have clear purpose and intent to support and empower the people. Not the clear purpose of the unelectable far left, who have a purpose, but that purpose is to destroy the nation, to remove all vestiges of national identity and pride. They want a one-party state with only themselves having power in perpetuity. This is unacceptable to all but a “lunatic fringe” of the population and so unelectable, if elections stay reasonably honest and open. This is why the far left oppose “proof of the right to vote” and wish to lower voting age to include children. This is why the far-left vote often seems be increased by numbers of “postal” votes which arrive in “blocks”
So, what are we going to do to change things? Lessening the power of the party machines would help but how? Make a rule that any candidate who stands in any constituency, must have lived or been working in that constituency for at least 5 years. Make the minimum age for candidacy 30 years old. Bring in much greater reliance on both local and national referendums, with the majority decision in such referendums being mandatory for the government or local authority, to accept and act on.
How to ensure a better quality of candidate is going to be difficult as the present party system tends to crush independent thought in favour of those who will agree the party line and not make waves. This probably why the Reform party are making such progress in the polls, they seem different, they seem to challenge the status quo. It is going to be a few years yet (it is now 2025) before we see if they can transfer poll results to seats in parliament and so form the government. If they do form a government, it will be interesting to see if they actually change things. Reduce the unsustainable numbers, cost and power of the bureaucracy. Will they embrace change that actually lessen the power of their own party machine?
