Ukraine Under Fire: Russia Launches Summer Offensive With Unprecedented Airstrikes

As the war in Ukraine enters its third summer, a dangerous new chapter has begun. Russia has launched what analysts describe as its most intense wave of airstrikes since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. From Kharkiv to Kyiv, Ukrainian cities have been battered by drones, missiles, and aerial bombs. At the same time, Russian troops have intensified ground operations across the eastern front.

Civilians are once again facing the grim consequences of a war that shows no sign of slowing down.

Kharkiv Suffers Deadliest Strikes in Months

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was hit by a massive Russian attack on the night of June 7. More than 400 Iranian-made Shahed drones and over 40 cruise and ballistic missiles were launched by Russian forces in a single night.

The city was devastated.

Apartment buildings collapsed. Fires erupted. A hospital was hit. Five people, including two children, were confirmed dead. Dozens more were injured.

This wasn’t just a military strike — it was a blow aimed at civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it a “deliberate terror campaign,” pleading with Western allies to accelerate air defense support.

Kyiv and Other Regions Under Siege

The capital city, Kyiv, also came under heavy fire. Six people died there, including emergency responders who were helping others escape. Over 80 people were injured as drones and missiles rained down.

Beyond Kharkiv and Kyiv, several other regions were hit:

  • Odesa reported explosions near its port.
  • Ternopil and Lutsk experienced power outages.
  • Kherson was shelled by artillery shortly after the air attacks.
  • Dnipropetrovsk saw its infrastructure damaged, causing partial blackouts.

Despite Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepting the majority of projectiles, many still slipped through — exposing gaps in Ukraine’s ability to defend its skies.

Russia’s Summer Offensive Begins

On the ground, Russian forces have launched their long-anticipated summer offensive. Fighting has intensified in eastern Ukraine, particularly near Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and along the Oskil River in Kharkiv’s border region.

Ukrainian officials reported over 150 front-line clashes in just 24 hours. While Russian troops have gained only minor territory, their strategy seems clear: stretch Ukrainian defenses thin by attacking on multiple fronts at once.

This war of attrition is not about quick wins — it’s about exhausting Ukraine's military resources.

Ukraine Strikes Back: “Operation Spiderweb”

Ukraine hasn’t remained passive. Using long-range drones, it launched Operation Spiderweb, targeting Russian airbases and fuel depots deep inside Russian territory — particularly in Kursk and Belgorod.

These strikes reportedly destroyed several aircraft and caused explosions at a major fuel depot. While Kyiv has not officially taken responsibility, military analysts believe this operation marks a new phase in Ukraine’s drone warfare strategy.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has downplayed the damage, but satellite images and local reports suggest otherwise.

A Failed Prisoner and Body Exchange Raises Tensions

Amid the escalating conflict, a scheduled prisoner and body exchange between the two countries collapsed at the last moment.

Russia accused Ukraine of pulling out of the deal, even after they prepared over 1,200 bodies for handover. Ukraine countered by accusing Moscow of manipulating the terms.

It was supposed to be a rare moment of humanitarian cooperation. Instead, it has become another symbol of broken diplomacy in a war that’s increasingly defined by destruction, not negotiation.

What Comes Next?

As June unfolds, this escalation feels different. It’s not just about ground battles anymore — it’s a war in the skies. With Russia launching massive air offensives and Ukraine countering with deep drone strikes, the conflict is evolving into a high-tech, high-stakes fight.

Civilians continue to suffer, and peace seems farther away than ever. With both sides showing no signs of backing down, the summer of 2025 could prove to be the most decisive — and deadly — yet.
